At least two of the Brown University students who were on campus when a deadly shooting unfolded there on Saturday have survived school shootings before. “What I’ve been feeling most is just, like, how dare this country allow this to happen to someone like me twice?”

Both women said the shooting on Saturday had damaged a sense of security they had cultivated for years based on the notion that they were unlikely to witness two school shootings in one lifetime.

Statement from Connecticut Public President and CEO Mark Contreras: "For Connecticut Public, this means the loss of $2.1 million in annual support... This funding has long supported our mission to inform, educate, and inspire, and its removal presents a serious challenge."
Public Statement from Connecticut Public on Federal Funding Rescission
We are deeply disappointed by Congress’s decision to approve the revised rescission package, which includes the elimination of critical federal funding for public media through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
For Connecticut Public, this means the loss of $2.1 million in annual support — funding that has helped sustain trusted journalism, free educational programming, and access to fact-based content across all corners of our state. This funding has long supported our mission to inform, educate, and inspire, and its removal presents a serious challenge.
However, this is not the end of the story — and we are not standing still.
Our response is rooted in determination and belief in the power of public media. In the weeks ahead, Connecticut Public will launch additional fundraising campaigns focused on growing monthly donor support to help fill the gap left by the loss of CPB funding. We are also exploring opportunities to deepen community partnerships and broaden philanthropic investment.
Most importantly, we remain committed to protecting the work, the people, and the impact that define Connecticut Public. Our audience can count on us to continue providing the trusted content and essential services they rely on — and we will be calling on that audience to help shape a stronger, more community-powered future.
Public media has always been built on public trust. We intend to keep earning it — and growing it — every day.

This year, the head of Connecticut’s DMV made a startling public admission, telling lawmakers that the agency, which regulates the towing industry, has never enforced a century-old law meant to protect drivers whose cars are towed. By Dave Altimari & @ginnymonk.bsky.social, @ctmirror.org

Connecticut DMV Never Set Up System to Enforce a Century-Old Towing Law
Towing companies can sell vehicles if owners don’t reclaim them or can’t afford the fees. To protect drivers, they’re supposed to turn over unclaimed profits, but the state says that’s never happened.

Gone in 15 Days: How the Connecticut DMV Allows Tow Companies to Sell People’s Cars

CT allows towing companies to sell some people’s cars after just 15 days — one of the shortest windows in the country. The sales have particularly affected low-income people, who have lost jobs after they were unable to get their cars back. With @propublica.org: ctmirror.org/2025/01/05/c...
