Findings from focus groups before the Makerfield by-election pointed at several things voters wanted to see Andy Burnham do when he was elected. It's refreshing to see he has already delivered on one of these.
Screenshot from the More in Common website at https://www.moreincommon.org.uk/research/makerfield/

Reads: The “Makerfield Test” starts with the cost of living: Burnham’s own “Makerfield Test” will be judged first on tangible improvements to people’s quality of life. Voters cited the Greater Manchester bus fare cap unprompted as proof he can deliver, and want to see more of this on a national scale.

Andy Burnham wins Makerfield with a 20% lead over Reform UK. But this result wasn't just about Burnham. It was shored up by thousands of Green and Lib Dem voters who crossed party lines to keep the far-right out, delivering the Labour candidate an outright majority.🧵

Our poll shows 73% of Makerfield voters have heard about Kenyon's vile comments on women and @carolvorders.bsky.social, thanks in part to the efforts of our activists supporting @hopenothate.org.uk's ground campaign. The verdict? 45% less likely to vote for him. Net effect on his campaign: -8% 📉

Progressives are backing Burnham to beat Reform. Our new poll shows 58% of Green voters and 70% of Lib Dem voters in Makerfield will vote for the Labour candidate to keep the far-right out. This tracks with our tactical voting advice on StopReformUK.vote 🔗 www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

🚨 It’s too close to call in Makerfield! Help us to mobilise the progressive vote in these final few days. Result from @opiniumresearch.bsky.social's survey of local voters: 🌹 Burnham (Labour): 46% ➡️ Kenyon (Reform UK): 41% The rest: trailing well behind. 5pt gap. Margin of error: ~5pts. It's tight.

A progressive majority can be invisible. If we stay divided, an extremist minority wins on a fraction of the vote. We’re joining @compassoffice.bsky.social to demand strategic cooperation. Let’s act like a majority. Sign the letter: forwarddemocracy.com/neighbourhood

The majority isn't small – it's just divided.

Over half a million people visited StopReformUK.vote in the run up to the 7th May elections – proof that people are seeking advice on how to vote tactically, putting the greater good ahead of their own party loyalties. Thank you to everyone who voted tactically to stop Reform! (or the Tories)

We saw that while the progressive majority was split, voters were willing to unite if given clear, independent evidence of which party was the tactical choice - we gave that advice, and made sure it reached them

A comment from Forward Democracy, the organisation behind StopReformUK.vote, on the results of the Gorton and Denton by-election
"The threat of a far-right government elected against the public will has made tactical voting more vital than ever. From the 2024 General Election to recent results in Caerphilly and Gorton & Denton, voters are proving they will put values over party labels to meet the moment. It is a tragedy of our voting system that we must vote strategically rather than sincerely - but until that system changes, tactical voting is our strongest shield against the right." - Tom de Grunwald, Director of Forward Democracy

⚠️Warning: there is no tactical voting site called "Tactical Choice" ⚠️ If you choose to vote tactically it's important to seek independent, impartial advice. And always check the source online, as printed leaflets could be out of date, or even intentionally misleading. #GortonAndDenton

Turnout could be very low at tomorrow’s local elections, but that means just a few more votes can be a real game changer! Don't let Reform win by default. Doubling your tactical vote is easy, just take a friend to vote together. Click to WhatsApp message a friend api.whatsapp.com/send?text=He...

Tactical voting doesn’t just mean voting for Labour everywhere, that could actually split the vote in many places and let in Reform where you are Libdems, Greens, or Independents are best to keep out Reform in many places, check using the website by entering your postcode StopReformUK.vote /2

There’s a Westminster election today?! It’s true, and because low turnouts favour the right wing, we’re running targeted ads to increase voting. Every election counts, we need to fight every one of them. Last time was very close, a handful of votes would flip it.

Did you know: Stop The Tories was very very VERY accurate Everywhere we thought there was a chance a Tory could win, our advice was correct. And no Tories won in places where our tactical voting guidance reassured people they could ‘vote with their hearts’.

At the general election, we had over 1.5m requests for tactical voting advice on stopthetories.vote This guidance about which candidate was best placed to vote to get your local Tory out was then screenshot into group chats and added to flyers The result was the end of 14 years of Tory rule 🙏

Parliament votes through first step to introduce PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION 💥 A long journey and a hard fight by many campaigners. We just had one of the most disproportionate results of all time, in our opinion mainly due to mass tactical voting. Maybe we can vote with our hearts next time 💘

How the far right is weaponising AI-generated content in Europe
Experts say fake images raising fears around issues such as immigration have proliferated since EU elections

AI-generated image of soldiers alongside a ‘We will remember’ them tweet about D-day landings, although they are walking into the sea rather than on to the beaches
An AI-generated image tweeted by Tommy Robinson. Illustration: @TRobinsonNewEra
In the aftermath of the Southport stabbings, when a teenager killed three young girls, AI was deployed to advertise protests and to post Islamophobic content, based on false assumptions about the identity of the alleged attacker. One image depicted bearded men in traditional Islamic dress outside parliament, with one waving a knife, behind a crying child in a union jack T-shirt. The tweet was captioned: “We must protect our children!”

The far-right activist Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, has also appeared in AI-generated images and has the technology on his own social media accounts, including one post commemorating D-day that attracted derision because it showed second world war troops marching off the beach and into the sea.

Using a surreal metaphor, how would you explain the difference between first past the post and proportional representation? Hopefully you can do better than the robots did for @drownedinsound.bsky.social
ChatGPT screen shot:

Imagine you're at a buffet, and everyone gets to vote for their favourite dish. In a **First Past the Post** (FPTP) system, only the most popular dish wins, and that's all anyone gets to eat—whether you like it or not. Even if 49% of the people voted for lasagne, if 51% wanted fish fingers, the entire buffet becomes fish fingers. Everyone else is left grumbling, hungry for lasagne.

Now picture **Proportional Representation** (PR). Here, the buffet reflects the votes. If 40% want pizza, 30% want sushi, and 30% want tacos, then the table is laid out with 40% pizza, 30% sushi, and 30% tacos. Everyone gets a slice of their preference, even if it’s just a smaller portion, and the buffet looks like the crowd that voted for it.

In FPTP, the buffet caters to the loudest majority; in PR, it’s a surreal mosaic of everyone’s tastes, however bizarre the combination.
