The old Suikoden games kinda did that with their EXP scaling. If an underleveled recruit participated in 3 or 4 random battles they'd shoot up to a level appropriate for the area almost instantly but you also wouldn't get much higher than that until progessing further.

Literally my only complaint is that act 2 drags a little towards the end when it makes you do side quests and find fleas for the true ending quest, that part could have been handled a little more smoothly.
