Viktor finds himself laughing again as he explains. “No, Jayce, it doesn’t mean you are a fool. This card symbolizes new beginnings, adventure, and spontaneity. You are on the precipice of something.”

“Let’s hope it’s not another whirlwind romance with a future defense lawyer,” Jayce mutters, just the right amount of self-deprecating to still be charming, to be funny. Absurdly, embarrassingly, Viktor laughs again, a bright little sound.

“Let me guess,” Viktor muses, joining in on the fun. “She was too commanding for you?”

“I, uh, liked that bit, actually,” Jayce says, face instantly screwing up like he didn’t mean to say that.

“Ah,” Viktor nods. “So, you take direction well?”

Jayce nods.

The temperature in the tent has risen by at least ten degrees, Viktor is sure of it.

“Well then, Jayce,” he drawls, already balking at his own audacity. “Show me how good you follow directions. Flip that last card for me.”

Jayce lets out a shaky breath, but his hands don’t waver when he runs a fingertip along the design adorning the back of the card.

God, his fingers are sinful. Viktor wants to bite them.
