Here's an old Japanese ad for Epoch's 1982 Dracula House handheld game. "Pull back the mysterious veil now!" The gameplay actually looks really awesome for it's time: youtube.com/watch?v=Iwp3g9…. And there is apparently a version that's playable on MAME! #gamehistory 👁‍🗨

A few pages from the 1990 Super Contra game manual for the Japanese Famicom. Almost all Famicom manuals had at least one extra color to make them pop a little bit (such as turquoise here). The NES manual for Super C is only black and white with much less art. #gamehistory 👁️‍🗨️ #contra

The Japanese #N64 box art for #BanjoKazooie ("Banjo & Kazooie's Great Adventure"). Banjo doesn't hold the same nostalgic place in JPN hearts that he does for many Westerners, but the game was well-enough received. The commercial is top-notch: youtube.com/watch?v=kg0m_f… #gamehistory 👁️‍🗨️

The original title for Fish Dude is "Uoozu", which is a fishy Japanese pun on the word "Wars".🐟 The game content is the same, but this is a good example of how JPN box art often got redone to try and resonate with and appeal more to (in this case) American audiences. #gamehistory 👁️‍🗨️

Style guides and the philosophy behind the logo from a 1999 Dreamcast Press Kit. The logo represents an uplifting community, optimistic and chill. Guidelines are presented on what to do if you can't fit in the swirl, and elsewhere, it's stated firmly that red is *not* to be used as a background.
a snapshot of the autorun splash page running in Windows 98 with a blurred DC controller in the background with Dreamcast Press Kit overlaid. You click on the start button to access the greater menu.A snap of the pdf style guide open in Adobe 3.1 with colour guides for the logo and black textA guide for when the simple black Dreamcast text logo can be used. The philosophy of the DC logo laid out and what it represents, also open in Acrobat. "The world of Dreamcast is an inviting, optimistic environment where everyone is encouraged to compete, contribute, and communicate. Designs should reflect the uplifting mood which is created by the Dreamcast brand and should reflect the sense of community delivered by Dreamcast's broadcasting capabilities."

I presume they're referring to the online capabilities of the DC.

As we get closer to the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, a quick reminder that numbered video game console generations are meaningless and really don't serve a purpose especially these days. Switch 2 is in 9th? 10th? Do you actually know what these numbers mean or just take Wikipedia at face value?

Five years ago, I wrote about how AI-generated synthetic media threatens to overwhelm the historical record of our era with fabricated artifacts and events, triggering an age of "post-history." Given new developments with Google Veo 3, it's still relevant today www.fastcompany.com/90549441/how...

AI threatens to rewrite history. Here's how to protect it
It’s going to be possible to create utterly fake video of past events, and we need to figure out what to do about that.
