I have come to recognise that life does not have to be a hustle, that for many of us a slower life is beneficial in so many ways. I write about it sometimes, and this post has a gentle activity to download and help you notice, be more playful. dovesandbullets.substack.com/p/slowing-down

Watching UK politics and parliament etc etc and there is one thing I would wish (well, one among many, but this is something that can be done immediately and without cost) for the love of everything Douglas Adams, will you stop name-calling and trashing each other and learn to work together.

Storytelling AND storylistening. Academics, the people you're trying to reach aren't empty vessels. They have expertise, stories, and their own ways of understanding the world. The most effective research communication begins with listening first. 💙

Whether you’re standing in a trough right now, or atop a pinnacle — All around you are paths to places limited only by your imagination. That’s not a platitude. It’s a genuine question. What are you imagining?

*Storytelling* Storytelling is powerful. Its our oldest form of communication. Arguably, there have been stories as long as there have been humans. If you package your research comms as storytelling, you get a more engaged audience that wants to listen and will remember your key message #PHDChat

My first job was chosen by my mother. My second was chosen by circumstance. My third by divorce. My fourth because a friend recommended me. Somewhere in the middle of all of that — I started to imagine. What did your path choose for you?

We treat our careers like maps. Plot a course. Follow the route. Arrive at the destination. But what if your career story isn’t a map at all? What if it’s a constellation — and you get to decide which stars to connect?

In order to do Research Impact, of any sort, you need 3 things. At the top is strategy – what is the goal & plan? You need capacity – what skills do your team need to do the impact you want? You need resources – software, hardware, pens and paper. Factor this stuff into your grant writing.
