🧸 This anti-tank #missile was found unexploded near a pastoral path in north-eastern #Afghanistan in 2019. Some #explosive items can look like ordinary objects. In areas affected by conflict, recognising the #danger can be a matter of life and death.

#Ukraine’s reconstruction needs are vast. Yet contractors cannot safely begin work on sites where #explosive ordnance may be buried beneath rubble. Clearing these hazards therefore needs to be considered as an integral part of the #reconstruction process.

💥 After months of training and preparation, FSD's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (#EOD) team successfully carried out its first operational task in #Ukraine. During a #clearance operation, the team safely disposed of an anti-tank shaped-charge round discovered by FSD #deminers.

Recently, representatives of our long-standing #partner, the @wfp.org, visited several sites in the #Kharkiv region where FSD teams are clearing #agricultural land. The guests observed the teams working in the field and learned more about the sites and the farmers.

In total, 47 plots were #released through this survey process. Previously used to grow grain and oilseed #crops, the fields can now be cultivated again, allowing machinery to return and supporting local #livelihoods.

🌾 21 million m² of #agricultural land released in Ukraine’s Sumy region FSD’s #NTS team assessed land considered potentially contaminated by explosive ordnance. Through field visits, interviews & evidence gathering, they identified areas that could be released without demining.

🍱 This antipersonnel #mine was found in #Tajikistan in 2023. Nicknamed the “black widow”, it is designed to detonate when pressure is applied to its pressure plate. For people living in #contaminated areas, an ordinary day can involve #risks that most of us never have to think about.

⚽ This #submunition was found in a rice field in #Laos in 2011. It is nicknamed the 'Guava bomb' because of its shape and green colour. For people living in areas affected by #explosive remnants of war, #danger can lurk in the places where they live, work and play.

Kostiantyn knows how real the danger is. In 2022, his team was marking a boundary when a local woman triggered an #explosive device after her bicycle hit a tripwire. Today, FSD teams are clearing these contaminated forest areas in #Chernihiv Oblast to make the forest safe again.
