I managed to end up in a workshop where I got to learn how to actually build stuff on this ESP32 ”name badge” from this year’s #goatmire, so I obviously had to create a Doom-like game on it. Drawback now is that I’m entirely convinced I can build any kind of smart home device/toy.

The drive home after 6 days of #goatmire. It’s not comparable to the Australasia crowds’ trip home, but it’s definitely not as fun as the drive down.

Makes me think of a local community installing fiber by themselves. Not expensive to install, not expensive to subscribe. Then they sold the network to a provider and the individual properties got the installation fee back as part the sale. Want to venture a guess if it’s still cheap to subscribe?

Not the same situation, but I’ve seen what I assume is more less the same trait at work more and more the last year or so. The kind of person that will talk nonstop for minutes in meetings, without it being a presentation, and even when the subject and forum calls for it being a back and forth.

As a dev, I think one of the most stabilizing things I've done to my computer is devcontainers for most things. As long as I have VS code and docker I can just work in any of my repos. Also means I don't "need" to have 3 versions of postgres and 15 versions of ruby installed _somewhere_.

I cannot express how much I loathe apps that have a monthly fee, unless it needs to pay for either content or infrastructure. That every other app on iOS is literally a scam doesn’t really help either.

My main anti-AI take: it's generally not as good as people believe and it's not going to be several magnitudes more advanced in 5 years. Still massively impactful and useful for a lot of purposes though.
