Washington valued religion in the Army, but he also defended liberty of conscience and resisted sectarianism in the ranks. A virtuous military is not an army of “believers.” It is an army in which Americans of every faith, and none, may serve with honor.

There are moments in a hearing when you can actually see the questioner realize the answer did not go where he expected it to go. This was one of those moments. Priceless

A military needs warriors. But a warrior ethos without equal emphasis on discipline, restraint, lawful authority and responsibility is incomplete. Military service is not about cultivating a desire to fight. It is about being prepared to serve when the nation lawfully asks.

AI needs guardrails. But good governance begins by asking what we are protecting: human dignity, privacy, freedom and responsibility. Regulation should help people use powerful tools well, not simply teach us to fear the tools themselves.

The AI debate needs more than a race for technological supremacy. It needs a conversation about human dignity, responsibility and the common good. The Church has something important to contribute, not all the answers, but questions we cannot afford to ignore.

There is nothing particularly Christian, muscular or otherwise, about delighting in the death of another human being. Christians may debate the morality of capital punishment. Celebrating death is something else entirely. We worship the God of resurrection, not vengeance.

A state tried to kill a human being and failed. The question now should not be how to do it better next time. Whatever one believes about punishment or the crime committed, human dignity does not disappear when someone enters a prison cell.

God can't be recruited to sanctify our violence. When faith becomes a weapon for justifying domination, it ceases to witness to God & begins serving human power. Leo’s words are worth hearing: nothing that destroys human dignity can claim God as its author tinyurl.com/29tza3z9

Perhaps the deepest lesson of these moments of lucidity is not that someone with dementia can suddenly “return.” It is that they never ceased to be a person. Our inability to reach someone must never become a reason to diminish their humanity. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2026/...

Some dementia patients grow lucid near the end. Scientists hope it’s a clue.
Accounts raise tantalizing questions about what happens inside a brain afflicted by dementia and whether cognitive abilities could possibly be restored.

Election integrity depends on law, process, and clear chains of custody. No official, regardless of party, should be able to set those safeguards aside because they suspect something went wrong. The rules matter most when the stakes are high.

Christianity does not need a theology of domination dressed up as masculinity. Jesus defines power through service, strength through self-giving love, and greatness through becoming servant of all. Any Christian account of power has to reckon with the cross.

The government may decide churches can endorse candidates. That doesn’t mean churches should. Preaching the moral demands of faith, even when political, is part of ministry. Telling a congregation which candidate deserves its vote is something else entirely.

Grief does not follow a hierarchy. Neither should our compassion, or our workplace policies. The question isn't simply who died, but what that relationship meant to the person left behind. Bereavement policy should begin there. www.the-independent.com/life-style/g...

Historic places are not blank canvases for whoever temporarily holds power. Ford’s Theatre carries the memory of Lincoln, assassination, Civil War and national grief. We inherit places like this as stewards. Our responsibility is to preserve their story, not overwrite it.

AI may be a competition between nations, but its consequences will not respect national borders. The U.S. and China do not need to trust one another to recognize shared risks. Human responsibility requires cooperation where cooperation is possible.

“Progressive evangelicalism” may be the most interesting part of this story. Hamilton is testing whether evangelical faith can be publicly articulated around Christ, justice and compassion without belonging to the Christian right. That is a significant development in American religion.

Economic policy eventually reaches the kitchen table, and the restaurant counter. When tariffs or other policies raise input costs, someone pays: businesses, workers, or consumers. That doesn’t make every bankruptcy political, but it does mean policy consequences deserve careful accounting.

I’m not sure the “Christian moral high ground” belongs to either party to reclaim. The church’s task is not to baptize a political platform, but to bear witness to the Gospel—even when that Gospel troubles the party we happen to support.

Peter Preble @frpeterpreble.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Exactly. “Can we build it?” and “Can we profit from it?” are not sufficient moral questions. The prior question is: what is this technology for? If its development cannot be ordered toward human flourishing, capability alone cannot justify its creation.

Peter Preble @frpeterpreble.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
This is an important distinction. The church’s role is not to tell people how to vote. It can help form people for citizenship: truth-telling, service, neighbor-love, and care for the institutions we hold in common. Serving at the polls is one very practical way to do that.

A useful reminder that winning the battlefield and winning the campaign are not always the same thing. Freeman’s Farm cost Burgoyne dearly while buying him very little. Sometimes the most consequential part of a “victory” is what it leaves you unable to do next.

When someone finally does the right thing, we should welcome it. But repentance is more than changing direction when the cost of staying the course becomes too high. It also requires an honest accounting of the harm done along the way.

This is what solidarity looks like. A free press cannot function if government gets to decide which journalists are acceptable based on whether it likes their reporting. When one newsroom’s freedom is threatened, the others have a stake in defending it.

An “AI Force” raises a fundamental question: who will be in the room? Industry expertise matters, but so do ethicists, labor, national security, environmental experts, faith communities and the public. AI policy cannot simply be the AI industry governing itself.
