Ending my Bsky takeover a little early, as I'm attending a state outreach event on Tapinoma magnum titled 'Small Ants, Big Challenge'. #Politics is never far from #invasionscience. Follow me at @garybugsyou.bsky.social for some of that later, plus more action from my #frontiers project. #scicomm

Much is said about the negative impact of introduced species on natives, but in #ecology, there are also winners of disruption. I've been told that the ant-loving silverfish Atelura formicaria is turning up in Tapinoma magnum nests in Germany. Will look into this further... #nature #climate #news

Sicily is a vital source of #data on new ant arrivals in Europe. It's in the native range of Tapinoma magnum and also the #EU landing point for the red imported fire ant. This new paper on that species' progress underlines the importance of #monitoring. 🐜🔗https://escholarship.org/uc/item/19g4g2m8

It's also important to draw clear distinctions between species that can bring harm to ecosystems and ones that are just expanding their range and being monitored. Another bee, Xylocopa pubescens, is one such species. Range change doesn't always mean bad - but it's worth keeping a watchful eye.

Among terrestrial invertebrates considered invasive in Europe, ant, slug and hornet species are pretty famous. But what about bees? The giant resin bee, Megachile sculpturalis, is on the move and causing concern. Though not on the formal #EU #invasivespecies list, it threatens other #pollinators.

There are many ways to monitor new species over time and space. One is the internet - but this policy brief from @onestop-project.eu claims that tightening access to online #data is stifling efforts. Should #research data access be enshrined in law? zenodo.org/records/22009561 #nature
zenodo.org
Mounting barriers to online data threaten systemic monitoring of invasive species [policy brief] | Zenodo
This policy brief argues that increasing barriers to online data threaten hollistic monitoring of invasive alien species at the exact moment biosecurity frameworks need digital evidence most.  Despite the proven value of digital data for continuous, low-cost biosecurity surveillance, access is collapsing as platforms impose steep fees and restrict researcher access. This global trend reflects intentional platform governance choices and the misapplication of regulations like the Digital Services Act (DSA), rather than technical limitations. The brief calls for six concrete policy actions to secure sustainable data access for environmental and human health monitoring. These include recognizing biosecurity as a DSA systemic risk, calibrating privacy safeguards, and upgrading EU-native infrastructure like EASIN and the European Media Monitor.
