Arcade baseball may be one of the greatest game loops. It's 4 tightly coordinated minigames in one. Pitching, batting, fielding, running.

Here is my dire prediction. RAM prices will stay. Nvidia and corps will push cloud compute like GeForce Now / Xbox Cloud. Game devs will have to continue targeting 2021 hw for 5+ years. Consumers will not get compute allocation outside of phones and TVs. No PS6. If you want a 16GB GPU, get it now.

In elementary, we had spelling tests every week, and the workbooks had an appendix with acceptable alternatives. For example, it said that "layed" and "tomatoe" were also correct. As a nerd, I took it literally and memorized them. 40 years later, it still trips me up.

The two Star Trek games announced this week were not on my bingo card. - A Voyager base management game - A VR zombie game where you as a vulcan try to hold onto your logic as you slowly turn into a zombie They're both a bit out of left field, but I'm here for it.

Today was my last day at GitHub/npm. I've been doing this for nearly 25 years, so I've accrued quite a bit of expertise. If you're looking for someone that is an experienced programmer with a passion for data in all forms (databases, apis, protocols, etc.) please reach out.

I wanted to make a shader for a random flame that looked hand drawn. So I took a gradient with some color banding, and wiggled it around with noise.

I recommend reading Mental Immunity by Andy Norman. We're all vulnerable to propaganda and conspiracy thinking, and we should be studying what makes us more and less vulnerable. As Norman puts it, we damage reason's fulcrum.

Outside of environmental engineering, the vast majority of our real remaining problems would not be best solved with technological solutions, but with social solutions (and even then).

New physics may have slim pickings, but there's a lot of room for innovation in new engineering and applied chemistry. (As @hossenfelder.bsky.social pointed out) But we may have plateaued on technology improving society. I don't believe in the techno-utopia anytime soon.

Why have bad faith arguments become the default? As individuals, we're very vulnerable to it. Court systems held out a bit longer, so they had to be actively corrupted instead.

I've been hesitant to call my 2.5 yr illness "Long COVID." It's a syndrome not a diagnosis, highly politicized, & has a lot of baggage. But I can't control what people think. Even as I get a more specific diagnosis, they're going to believe whatever they want. "Long COVID" is good enough shorthand.

Seasons greetings from Worf
Scene from Star Trek The Next Generation's Christmas Special and it's a real Worf masterpiece. He's standing, in uniform, and holding his arms out gripping the air like Macho Man Randy Savage pumping up the crowd. There are two black cattle prod looking objects with glowing red lights on the end of them being poked into his chestal region, basically straight in them nipples. His face is alive with the fire of a thousand suns. Merry Christmas.

Long Covid, a syndrome more accurately described as a superset of Post Covid Conditions, can last from weeks to years. It may include mast cell issues, cardiovascular damage, viral holdouts & more. It's not any one thing. 6% of US adults have it, many of whom have debilitating symptoms.
