I volunteered to canvass for a local (progressive) politician recently (actually pretty fun, like a weird form of trick or treating) and VERY consistently, the only assholes (sneering, rude, hostile) were tesla owners. Even the non-tesla conservatives were civil and friendly. Much to think about.

I think I would have so much fun styling outfits for friends. I’ve gotten into the habit now of looking at women’s clothing too just because it’s fun to appreciate and imagine how it would look on different people. Dressing up is part of my joie de vivre, I’d love to share it with more people.

Started reading David Sedaris essays on a whim after finishing Nabakov’s Invitation to a Beheading (great, as always), mainly because I read he religiously wears CDG and that fascinated me. Dude was making me laugh out loud on the plane nonstop—wtf how I have never read him before?!

Spent 7 hours on the flight back home journaling every single day of the trip, while documenting each date with tickets and receipts and other flat packed memories. I wrote 36 pages in total, and I have a callus forming like I just got out of finals season, but that flight felt like 2 hours, wow.

It is ironic that Paris is stereotyped as a rude city—I found Parisians to be very polite. They just expect politeness/respect back, and have no problem being no-nonsense with you, which I found incredibly refreshing compared to North American cultural standards for forced happiness and warmth.

Boarding flight back to Toronto rn. Europe was wonderful—my only regret is not going earlier in my life! I will greatly miss Paris and Milan; both more fabulous than I could have imagined. Fashion/design lover paradise, but Paris especially felt really special—I loved the Parisians I met.

My favourite parts of this trip were being in places people actually lived and worked. Seeing a public square with families playing with their kids after work in Rome was infinitely more beautiful and life-affirming than any of the historical sites we saw. Quaint surroundings were the most charming.

There’s only so much that history and beautiful architecture can do to cover up the hustlers selling Temu trinkets and AI-art “paintings” of the site you’re in front of, or slimy cafe hosts shoving AI-food menus w/ €12 spritzes in your face, or the slack-jawed gym-clothes adorned selfie stick-ers.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt the corruptive pull of misanthropy more than visiting the Trevi fountain. We were wise enough in Paris to see how awful one hyper-tourist site was (Sacré-Cœur Basilica) and not bother with the Eiffel Tower and others. In Rome these places were very mentally draining.

We are on the coast of the Tyrrhenian sea, and I was amazed by how full of life and crystal clear the beaches are. Little fish swim alongside you and curiously follow you on the beach. There’s bays on the Great Lakes that are equally as clear and idyllic but I’ve never seen sea life like that.
