In the Cubs-Mariners game on 8/21 this season, the umpire actually called a balk on Matthew Boyd for doing that move. He and Craig Counsell were just livid, probably the first time they'd ever seen that happen. They couldn't believe it.

Later, Vesia picked off Bauers with a move that is really against the rules (he'd started to move towards the plate, and didn't step directly towards 1B), but it's almost never called a balk because for some reason everybody has agreed that lefties should get away with it (the classic Pettitte).

I always sing a bit of "He's So Fine" in my head (specifically the background vocals) when he comes to bat.

Note that Megill had a 3.29 FIP with the Twins. They gave up on him because they fixated on his ERA.

Do you remember the person lying in bed while the killer is hiding underneath with an arrow? I’ll never forget.

Once when I was 10-11, I went to a neighborhood Halloween party where they showed Friday the 13th, which I really should not have seen. Thinking about some of it still freaks me out.

At the start of the season, the FanGraphs median projection for the Twins was 79 wins. So, yeah. He didn’t exactly pull the right strings or inspire his team to reach beyond themselves. They probably would‘ve done as well with Rocco or anyone else they might’ve interviewed.

Megill had a 3.29 FIP (9.8 K/9, 3.4 BB/9, 0.8 HR/9) with the Twins in 2022. Falvey should’ve ignored his ERA and held onto him. Another front office blunder.

And the Braves had to go with a bullpen start on Sunday only because Walt Weiss decided to use Chris Sale in relief to protect a 6-2 lead a few days before

I haven’t seen the news. Was it Cal, Julio, Naylor, Muñoz, Miller, or Castillo?

I once saw Eddie Guardado dive, like completely lay out, to catch a ball in foul territory that had deflected off a Metrodome speaker. How could you not be romantic about rec room baseball?

Everyone must know by now that Joe Ryan tends to have a big first half, then things fall apart. The Twins should get a better return if they offer a full season of his services.

I think the limited challenges adds some drama and strategy to the game. People enjoy it when their players get a challenge right, or when the other team gets one wrong, passes on a chance to challenge when they would've won, or has to eat it because they've already blown their challenges.

From 2016-18, Jerry tweaked Jack Z's core to win 86, 78, and 89 games. Then came 2 years of tanking. Since 2021, the M's are 519-453, tied-9th with the Jays. This was their first losing season in 6 yrs. The upcoming young talent looks promising. I think it makes sense to stick with the program.

Btw, the pitching staff's 100 FIP- tied with 3 teams for 16th. Despite the down year from a few key veteran bats, Colt regressing into the earth, and Donovan missing most of the season, the offense's 102 wRC+ tied with 5 teams for 8th. They're keeping the pitching coaches.

Maybe Arroyo moves there, or Young moves over and Arroyo plays 2B, and Donovan is Super UT. Or, bear with me, maybe they sign one J.P. Crawford to play 3B for the next 2 years. (Probably not, but he actually was a respectable fielder at the hot corner this season.)

I'm sure that he's been looking forward to testing the market, where he'll probably get 5-6 years, maybe as much as $30M/yr. Although the M's could fit that in the budget, should they commit so much to a LF/DH from age 32-37, who probably just had his career year? Or just trade for a younger player?

I just watched Luis Castillo pitch against the Yankees on March 30 (SPOILER: a 2-1 Mariners win, Cal Raleigh hit a walk-off line drive past the 1B), when the season was so full of hope and promise

The Mariners usually catch fire in the 2nd half as Julio gets hot, even if it’s not always quite enough. And this year, something short of 85 wins may do it. The Astros apparently have the offense to outgun their WC3 rivals, too.

Bob Weir (Grateful Dead) played this Ibanez guitar in the ‘70s. Do they all have that kind of decorative inlay somewhere?

The way that Alex toured the country to visit every other suitor, but then summoned the M’s to Miami during the holidays only after he had a deal with Texas, and reportedly lied to the club about things like wanting a shorter contract with a 3-yr opt-out, will never sit well with me.

I think it goes to show that if you’re in a position to sell off relievers at the deadline, go ahead. Because it doesn’t put you in such a hole that you can’t compete next year, rebuilding the pen isn’t so hard. Jax-Bradley already looks good; hopefully Rojas & Abel become good SP’s as well.

St. John @frightwig.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
I suppose that they‘ll be hyping Kade’s arrival every which way. Adding him + Dominguez, and Brash + Vargas this month, seems fine. If they miss the postseason, I don’t expect it to happen because they didn’t go get Luke Weaver or Jeff Hoffman. Mostly depends on Cal & Julio particularly getting hot.

St. John @frightwig.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
If they’re ultimately trading Varland + a few lotto tickets (Hill at #13 is the only player in the org top 30 at FG) for Hoffman, Rojas, and Roden, that’s fine. There’s still a fair chance that Rojas will be the most valuable player in that package.

If they’re serious about trying for the WC3, they have to hang onto him. And I think they probably need him next year, too. Maybe move him to 1B if the OF gets too crowded (still a big if).
000
St. John @frightwig.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
That was his first mistake. And then he shouldn’t have even thought about throwing to 2B, because if Julio just has the awareness to stop (OK, not a given), there’s no chance of tagging him before Randy scores, anyway. Once he stepped on 1B, he should’ve immediately thrown to the plate.

From 5/1 thru 7/3, Castillo had a 3.47 FIP (87 FIP-). He’s generally pitched well this year, except for a cold rainy April night in Minnesota and recently facing the Rays & Dodgers. I expected this, but I think he’ll do well for the White Sox as he did down the stretch last year, too.

Even this week, I was thinking that Naylor moves about like an old man who can’t believe that you made him get up from his chair for some bullshit. I’m pretty sure that he’s been playing through nagging injuries for months, if not all season.

I’d guess that Kade will be added to the pen down the stretch, and then someone will be traded next winter to clear a rotation spot for him in ‘27. Unless someone goes on the IL in the meantime.
000
St. John @frightwig.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
They need a reliever more than a #6 SP on the roster right now. The move also clears some payroll budget if they want to add before the deadline or next winter. And they’d probably have to trade Castillo + one more SP by next spring to clear a rotation spot for Kade, anyway.

In my 7th grade Social Studies class, we had a weekly Current Events game, sort of like Jeopardy! The teacher tried to call on the first person to raise a hand, but often we’d get to a point when he’d say, “OK, anybody but St. John.” Which surely won me bonus social points with my classmates.

It couldn’t have happened today, he was at 95 pitches after 6 IP. And the bullpen is well-rested. Dan did the right thing, pulling Hancock before he ran out of gas; Bazardo just didn’t come through. And unfortunately the bats have not done more to cover for him.
