Founders that want to create better products and better brands need to learn how people make decisions. Behavioral Economics is about exactly that, and here are 10 books that can help you learn what you need to know.

Part of the way we develop taste is by looking at things. It doesn't matter if you design digital products or physical ones. Checking out architecture, furniture, software, and other objects can help you understand and appreciate design and inform your design decisions.

What comes to mind feels more likely, even when that doesn't match reality.

Recall Over Reality - The Availability Heuristic
We judge how common or probable something is by how easily examples come to mind, not by how often it actually happens.

Ask someone whether more English words start with "K" or have "K" as the third letter, and most will say "starts with K." The actual answer isn't close — three times as many words have K in the third position.

Behaviour design is about enabling people, not manipulating them. But in order to do it well, you have to understand the principles, and in order to do that you have to read the source material.

The Behavioral Economics Reading List
Before you can use a bias in a design decision, you need to understand where it came from, who found it, and how badly it's usually misapplied.

Every "psychology of design" post traces back to the same six or seven experiments. Most people never read past the summary. This list is the shortcut past the shortcut — the actual books, in an order that builds understanding rather than just collecting hooks.

Yasuo Kuroki
Yasuo Kuroki didn't design a product. He designed a way of being alone in public.

Yasuo Kuroki (1932–2007) spent his career at Sony proving design isn't decoration applied after engineering finishes. It's the thing that decides what gets built in the first place. He set the size, the buttons, the switches — and let the engineers work inside the shape he'd already decided on.

More design psychology.  People expect websites to basically work the same as other ones they visit. Sure, that's boring. But it's also worth remembering.

Eight lamps that show great design still holds up, decades later.

A table lamp has one job: put light where you need it. Modernism took that brief more seriously than any movement before or since. No trim, no apology, no pretending to be something other than a light source with excellent posture. These eight prove the brief still holds up, decades later.

Landor's studio went on to design some of the world's most well-known marks.

Walter Landor
He coined the line that every brand strategist still steals — "products are made in the factory, but brands are created in the mind".

Frictionless @frictionlessdesign.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
In 1964, Walter Landor bought a derelict ferryboat and turned part of it into a fake supermarket. Not a showroom — a working mock aisle, stocked with real competing products, where his team could watch how a new label performed next to the shelf-mates it would actually have to beat.
