yeah, I've found it super useful in general when talking about the harms of AI, both in personal work but also in how it pollutes social media/communication/art in general

productivity productivity productivity come on are you done yet? hurry just finish the thing productivity!! ok I'll finish it for you I'm stealing your idea and releasing it before you bc you're too slow I'm actually not a bad guy you're just gatekeeping
0430
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
sorry the idea guys can't hear you because they think communication only goes one way
0630
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
oh it's a dialogue heavy game? can't use gibberish VO? okay so this is radical but hear me out - what if, you collaborate with, aspiring voice actors? or, just get your friends or family to help out? I will warn you this requires some socialization, collaboration, and creativity though, ugh :(
63214
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
but maybe your game truly needs AI generated VO. maybe you can't afford professional VO! who am I to gatekeep your vision! you're aiming higher than shitty low tier games that couldn't even bother with professional voice acting like undertale, outer wilds, and hollow knight
32834
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
if your supposed skill is in ideation, and yet you can't think of a single way to make your game without AI generated VO? then you've got a pretty long way to go with your ideas if your only conception of "good" is "high fidelity/professional"

Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I think I've reached a point where I'm ready to just bite the bullet on the fact that, yes, we should gatekeep art, actually we do not owe you access to the sum total of every single professional creative skill that was extracted from humanity and put into the machine, without our consent

when I started learning illustration i kept thinking "man, this is hard, I'd rather just roll a dice several times to get something approximately finished, that I can then use my human effort to clean up"

"AI lets you focus on the higher level ideas!!" because we all grew up dreaming of becoming managers and CEOs we all know the real artists at the very highest level are the shareholders, famously full of amazing ideas

a pathology for craftsmanship taken to the extreme would be someone drawing the same picture over and over for years, with 0 desire to grow or any vision for creating something more impactful beyond themselves or their own enjoyment
3741
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
this isn't to say it's bad to have a visionary/artistry stance, I think it's good to have a healthy balance of all three. they all have pathologies at the extremes, but I think most tend to lean a lot more towards the craftsmanship and creativity side, the more experienced they become
2732
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
there's even a derogatory term for inexperienced yet overly confident people who lean in the artistry/visionary direction - "idea guys" they don't know how or even if something is possible but they want their ideas realized and they're confident it'll be great
11120
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
others lean more in the artistry/visionary direction. they want to realize their vision/idea, but they don't really care how they get there, and if that's the case, whatever gets you there faster is simply better (...theoretically)
4841
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I think this is a really good example of the problem with the word "artist", and where the creativity vs artistry/vision vs craftsmanship lens can be useful people who agree with the sentiment here (myself included) heavily value craftsmanship - skipping over the craft defeats the purpose but,
531830
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
yeah, this seems pretty likely
040
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
the average artist works really damn hard for generally pretty bad pay and/or bad working conditions but I think passionate people engaging in skillful work should be recognized and rewarded! this feels extremely obvious to me but maybe it's not anymore, in this productivity obsessed hellscape
01345
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I genuinely don't understand why so many people have an almost instinctual feeling that artists don't deserve success, or worse, that success is somehow necessarily antithetical to being a true artist it's like there's no way to win, except for total self-sacrifice and devaluing of your work
81435
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
sometimes it feels like a lot of normal people conceptualize an "artist" as a superposition of both A. a super wealthy fine art elite who does low effort abstract art nobody understands B. someone magically born with the art talent gene even though A is 0.000001% of artists and B is not a thing

I'm thinking maybe the top left black/white dot isn't as restrictive as I imagined it would be if I consider the puzzles separately although the real solution is probably to sleep on it
6470
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
actually wait I think it *is* impossible the way I drew it, but the way this works in-game is slightly different it's actually 6 puzzles with these individual features separately, but they need to all be solved with the same path

This was fascinating but also the normie influencer guy's lines of questioning made me want to peel my eyeballs That said: it isn't surprising that normies whose position leans toward "wow you make GAMES for a living? wish I got to play games for a living!" are now "well, you can STILL make games-"

Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
there are hacks that work around it, you can straight up lerp quaternion components directly, and normalize the result this is computationally faster, it's just one square root and some mul/adds, but it's nonlinear. ie: the angle doesn't change at a constant rate
000
Freya Holmér @freya.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
not sure what you mean that there "should" be a simpler way! quaternions don't store angles, similar to how a rotation matrix doesn't, so anything that involves angles requires recovering that angle one way or another
