Hi. Probably late to the party but #kidlit and #picturebook friends please get your hands on these books. Two of the funniest picture books I’ve read lately. Absolute chaos and I loved all of it.

The Phantom Tollbooth Quotes @phantomtollbot.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
Five very tall, thin gentlemen regally dressed in silks and satins, plumed hats, and buckled shoes rushed up to the car, stopped short, mopped five brows, caught five breaths, unrolled five parchments, and began talking in turn. “Greetings!” “Salutations!” “Welcome!” “Good afternoon!” “Hello!”

When the rejection comes (and it comes quite often) on the #kidlit path to publication, I give myself like 15 mins to stare off into space and question my own skills. Then I make a list of things I can do immediately to improve. The list is always refreshing. Onward! #picturebooks #amquerying

I think sometimes for me it’s differentiating between a funny idea and a funny story. Trial and error, I suppose, but there’s many things in the notebook that sounded funny until I realized it probably didn’t have a story in it. It’s good practice though!

Today I thought about the ridiculously silly videos I’ll make when I eventually have a picture book to promote. Did it include costumes? Probably. Will my dog be present? Perhaps. Will the clips be studied as peak comedy for future generations? It’s best we leave that to the historians. #kidlit

Totally agree with you, Brittany. One thing I love is when an absurd list of “things” is added to the text. I want it to be a little excessive and chaotic.

@nancyhudgins.com has written one of my favorite books of the year so far. Please read “Books Good Enough For You: The Storied Life of Ursula Nordstrom”. The masterpieces that Ursula shepherded into existence is astonishing. One right after the other. This book is a seminal #kidlit text!

Day 6. Funny picture books. From my shelf. THE PAPER BAG PRINCESS by Robert Munsch and Michael Martchenko. The princess is just way cooler than the prince and the dragon. And much smarter. Couple of bums in this story. The princess ain’t one of them. #kidlit #picturebooks

Totally agree, Troy. Creating something that wasn’t there before is part of the joy of writing. Why would I supplement that? If you can’t put in the work and need something else to actually write your picture books, you need to find something else to do.

This is a picture of me! The author of BOOKS GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU! I'm wearing a red sweater and a baby blue scarf and I'm holding a copy of my book! As you might expect, I'm grinning delightedly! The cover is the same cover for the audiobook, which is read by recording artist Barbara Rosenblat. She's terrific! It's out today, too.
