Just about the saddest news of the day. (In Dutch, translated for you) www.nu.nl/media/641036...
Paul Haenen is stepping down after more than fifty years as the voice dubbing artist for the Sesame Street puppet Bert. Haenen cites the death of colleague Wim T. Schippers last June as the reason. Schippers provided the voice of Ernie.

The council presumably shrugs because it's an occasional event and "what else could we do". The answer is you should fill the verge with bike racks. Temporary bike racks.

It beats this one of a lad cheerful as he gets close-passed.
A Dutch billboard stating "De scholen zijn weer begonnen" (school has started again). Two school kids are pictured riding their bikes towards the viewer, a girl behind a boy, smiling. The front of a black car, also heading towards the viewer, is visible next to the boy, alongside the girl and slightly behind the boy's elbow. If the composition is taken as real, the car is about to hit or dangerously close-pass the boy.

They're banned in some places in NL🙁 Totally missing the point. Some mums at my kids' school use them because they're competitively price ebikes and commonly have long saddles for kids to ride pillion.

He said: "I think one person made the assumption and everybody else followed that assumption."

"Bell broken, please wave" - message at the dock of the Nessersluis ferry this morning. It seems permanent, I guess running a door bell wire across a river is not simple. We had a nice ride this morning amongst the cows, sheep and feral kittens of the Ronde Hoep, south of Amsterdam.
A steel box next to a river. A sticker on the box reads "BEL DEFECT. GRAAR ZWAAIEN. ONZE EXCUSES".

Another sticker, just in shot, reads "hier alleeen pinnen" - meaning "here you can only pay by bank card".

There's a lever on top of the box, the function is unclear.

In the background, above the box, a cable can be seen stretching across a river. Beyond that, somewhat blurred, is a cable ferry on the other side of the river.

Green trees flank modern houses.A view from the edge of the ferry down the river, untroubled waters, blue sky, fluffy clouds and a duck complete the picture - it was a nice day.

Electric ferry with solar panels in Rijsenhout. It takes less than a minute to cross the Haarlemmermeer Rondvaart Kanal and runs year round (weekend voyages only happen April to October). It saves a ~6km detour for bikes.

The lad made a 42km trip to our campsite last week. His longest yet and something to be super proud of. The lass, who is older and more able, did the return trip with me to pick up the car on the same day, clocked 72km. Another record!
A girl on a bike on a sand path. Clear skies, hedgerow, green fields and a blond plait.Even more beautiful than a green landscape, a beautiful broad cycle path made of red asphalt. It's smooth and well maintained, appearing new (it is).

A red-legged shield bug, looking after the skin on my leg for me.
A rough-skinned flat-bodied bug sits amongst hairs on human skin. The bug is brown in appearance but shows some rainbow-coloured edges typical of diffractive effects in fine-structured materials. The rear of its body shows two transparent wings otherwise hidden beneath a tough shell, and a striped frill around the edge (but I don't know what that is).

I noticed this because I sometimes cycle, sometimes drive with my kids to their school, which is along a 2km 60kmh road with more cycle lanes allocation than motor vehicle. Img: @bicycledutch.bsky.social, bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2020/08/12/c...
A Dutch road where more asphalt is painted red than there is black road for motor vehicles in between (in fact, the black road is too narrow for a car, and these are not really cycle lanes.)

Today I saw my first one of these, and what a beauty! *A purple-barred yellow moth in North Holland dunes.
A moth (that you could easily mistake for a butterfly, it's so pretty) sitting on a ground scattered with brown leaves or seeds amongst some yellowing grass. The moth is a purple-barred yellow and has pink and yellow stripes running across both wings.

During lunch in the dunes today we watched a field digger wasp bury her eggs. She only buried them 1-2cm deep but in her defence, the sand was pretty hot and she was being watched by two excited kids.

I don't think I'm ignoring it, I don't see evidence of a collapse! There have been many recent scarcities and price rises, but they appear to be down to commercial, political and economic events. In my life time there were huge, lengthy famines! Why do you say there's a collapse now?

I saw a Holly Blue butterfly while I was putting the washing out in the sunshine, so snapped it with my phone. I took it from the sunny side, pointing towards me, so had no view of the screen. Does that make it a 180 no-scope?
A small butterfly sits on the tip of a barely open purple flower bud.

Its folded wings are pale-blur with a pattern of dark flecks.

More pink flowers are in the blurred background, as well as an impressive set of abs under a brown tee shirt. Well, impressive for a 50 year old who doesn't exercise and eats badly.

More Dutch niceness. It's been a long journey this year, after a back injury on Jan 01, but this is probably my 8th or 9th ride this year, achieving 37km of pain-free fun.
