You're self-righteousness does not alter reality.

The entire background to the word "CHRIST" is that an alternative king was anointed, an alternative to the Herodians who were Roman vassals. This fits well with the history of Judea and entire region, which culminated in the bar Kokhba revolt.

When Tacitus writes of Nero blaming Christians for the big fire in Rome, Tacitus goes on to describe Christians in some nasty terms. This suggests that Christians were likely anti-Roman, which is in keeping with several of the canonical NT books. They were not "gnostics", theyh were anti-Romans.

You made an assertion that is just factually wrong. What little can be harvested from the earliest surviving Christian literature, and a handful of non-Christian sources, the earliest Christians were Jewish and somehow tied to apocalypticism (which was popular at the time.)

You know that climatologists use multi-decadal averages, which is the right thing to do. As for "lines", it's about you trying to project the present into the future based on simply drawing a line.

Josephus mentions, over his works, several troublemakers during the time of Roman occupation (starting with Augustus taking over the Levant from the what was left of the old Greek hierarchy.) Josephus was taken slave by the Roman in charge of the whole shebang. Josephus wrote in Greek.

"The Gospel of Matthew was first written in Hebrew" <- nope, it is very much a Greek document. You really need to get out of the cloistered halls of Christian orthodoxy and try the wider world of scholarship.

Scholars widely agree that Paul did not write the Pastorals. This conclusion is based on a lot of good reasoning.

Ok, then: The Symbol Jesus told the following parable: "... ‘Go out into the roads and lanes, and COMPEL people to come in ..." (Lk14:12 NRSVUE) That was interpreted early and down through history, to tell the Church to force people into the Kingdom of God (i.e., the Church.)

"Strong historical evidence" <- for WHAT? There is zero evidence for Paul until Marcion brought a 10-letter compilation to Rome in the middle of the 2nd century. There is zero historical evidence for "Jesus" until Josephus wrote, six decades after the alleged events.

"Jesus wasn't...." <- how would you, or anyone, know? The only historical record, by Josephus, numbers him among the troublemakers. And the Jesus in the Revelation to John of Patmos is painted rather starkly: his robes are dripping with blood, and it is not his.

Maybe some of us know more about "religion as a whole" than you're assuming. Then again, I was not raised in a mainline (or any) Christian church.

It is frustrating to see so many people not really grasp that the modern invention of the socialist-progressive Jesus is very far from the historical norm in Christianity.

They DO compromise, even if those are not the compromises you like. That's the thing with fundamentalists supporting Trump: they compromised on some of their long standing political beliefs to get someone in who would do slash-and-burning to modern institutions.

"the apostle Paul one the most educated" <- from where did you get that idea? Little to nothing is known about this "Paul". The book of Acts contradicts the letters ascribed to "Paul", and that is why many scholars discount Acts (there's actually a lot of reasons to believe Acts is faux-history).
100
Freetoken @freetoken.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
That's not what NT scholarship has shown. The NT books were written after 70CE, probably after 90CE, a few are clearly written in the 2nd century, and the rest (such as Acts and Luke) were clearly edited in the 2nd century. Also, the Synoptic Problem clearlly shows the canonical gospels plagarize.

The bias that is most common is belief in univocality. Also, the gospel variations are late, written several decades after the supposed events, by people who were not there.

I identified a an example of cultural bigotry, that happened to be common in that part the world at that time. It still exists today. You're also assuming univocality, something that is quite contradicted by the entirety of the NT and the Hebrew scriptures.

Modern conservatism is not the same as evangelical Christianity. The latter is much older. I thought that was obvious. Modern conservatism is a reactionary movement of the 20th century, against, well, modernism as it was understood in the 20th century.

The Anglicized "daemon" is from the Greek, for a minor spirit, compared to gods who were major beings. Enochic groups made them into evil beings. And Enochic beliefs strongly influenced NT writings. It's a Christian cultural thing to see "demon" as a "malevolent being."

Freetoken @freetoken.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Well, that's been around for a long time. The current version is a product of the Protestant Reformation, as new sects kept splitting and fervor grew.

Freetoken @freetoken.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Not medieval but Hellenic. Christianity adopted many Greek ideas. Eventually it was Romanized, with the Bishop of Rome taking on the title that used to be given to Roman emperors.

Freetoken @freetoken.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
"for 4000 years" <- fundamentally a lie. "Jew" comes from "Judea", from "Judahite" (all Anglicized of course.) It comes from the Neo-Babylonian empire falling. Before that they were all Canaanites. And by "they" I mean all the inhabitants of the area.

Freetoken @freetoken.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
"Jews have been slaughtered and oppressed since ..." <- no more than any other ancient group that lived in a part of the world with competing polities. The modern anti-Semitism is an invention of Christianity, starting in the 2nd century.

Hearsay, third-hand information, etc. are not historical sources, save for a *topic* existed. Christians existed during Nero's time, and Tacitus is a witness to that. His CHRISTUS (or possible CHRESTUS according to some mythicists) is his interpetation of what he heard from somebody.

While it is true that many American Christians believe that today, historically there was always a problem with the so-called divinity of Jesus. There were big Christology debates for centuries.

Tacitus is not a historical source for Jesus. Tacitus is a historical source for Christians in Rome. Tacitus' reference is trying to explain the meaning of the word "Christian" for the group so labeled. And even then, he gets it wrong (there was no one named "CHRISTUS" for the founding.)

“anti-Herodian Jewish zealot” is likely the ONLY possible *historical* statement that can be made about that Jesus. Historians don't deal in magic. The only historical reference to that Jesus is by Josephus, and the latter lists the former among a group of troublemakers.
