WE DID IT! Just an hour ago, @governor.ca.gov signed into law AB 1267 to ban child marriage in CA. Unchained at Last and the @ccswg.bsky.social organized a bipartisan campaign that we were honored to be a part of, and Assemblymember @gailpellerin.bsky.social wrote the bill that made it happen.

"Confessions of a Pulpiteer" was a great success. THANK YOU to Lee and everyone from the Public Works Improv Theatre, to @center4inquiry.bsky.social for underwriting the entire event, and to our volunteers for making it happen. We had at least 50 in attendance and Lee's performance was wonderful.

@governor.ca.gov Newsom, California Freethought Day, a non-partisan and non-profit organization in California, would like to affirm our support for AB-1267, which would set the marriage age in California at 18, without exceptions.

Governor Newsom,

California Freethought Day, a non-partisan and non-profit organization in California, would like to affirm our support for AB-1267, which would set the marriage age in California at 18, without exceptions.

Our organization represents the secular community within California – commonly identified as atheists, Humanists, skeptics, agnostics, and “nones”.

We support ending child marriage because it conflicts with our commitment to individual rights, equality, and evidence-based public policy. Children, including teenagers, cannot meaningfully exercise the freedom and autonomy that marriage requires, and underage marriage has too often been linked to coercion, abuse, trafficking, and the erosion of legal protections for minors. A society that values human dignity, equal rights, and informed consent should ensure that marriage is a choice made only by consenting adults.

In 2024, we advocated for the passage of AB-2924 in its original form – before it was watered down to the point of being ineffective. We were glad to see AB-1267 (2026) introduced, with stronger protection for minors than AB-1267 (2024) and believe it is time to finally pass such a resolution.

Our reasons for support have not changed. Children, as young as 15 years old, should not be forced into marriage – yet this very practice continues in California.

We have urged our lawmakers to promptly enact AB-1267 and protect minors without exceptions. We now ask for your signature on this unanimously bipartisan legislation.
