For those without Facebook.
Reform wants you to be angry about a “holiday tax”. But step back for a second and look at what is actually being proposed.
The government is giving Mayoral Strategic Authorities across England the power to introduce a local overnight visitor levy. Crucially, it’s a devolved power - local areas can decide whether to use it and how the revenue is used.
And this is hardly some radical new idea.
Visitor taxes are already common in major European cities. Amsterdam charges 12.5% of the overnight accommodation price, while Edinburgh’s visitor levy is 5% from July 2026. Paris, Venice, Berlin and Barcelona also have visitor levies.
The money can then be invested in the places people come to visit - events, culture, infrastructure, tourism and local facilities.
Take Liverpool.
Liverpool City Region attracted more than 61.5 million visitors in 2025, generating a record £6.8bn visitor economy and supporting more than 57,000 jobs. Around 6 million of those visitors stayed overnight.
So why shouldn’t a city like Liverpool have the option to ask visitors staying overnight to make a small contribution towards the infrastructure, services and attractions they come to enjoy?
That isn’t an attack on working people. It’s giving local people more control over how their area funds and manages its visitor economy.
And this is where Reform’s constant outrage machine needs a bit of perspective.
They want you to see the words “tax” and immediately get angry. 😡
Instead, step back and ask the obvious question:
If millions of people come to Liverpool every year, why shouldn’t Liverpool be able to capture a tiny amount of that visitor economy and reinvest it in the city and its local communities?
That’s what devolution is supposed to mean - giving local people the power to make decisions about their own area.
Reform are not your friends.

Analysis
Farage chose to fight this by-election and then didn't show when he won - why?

09:36

Chris Mason
Political editor, in Clacton

Good morning from Clacton, where I’m indulging in an entirely typical pursuit of an August summer’s day, which is to come to the seaside.

But my intention was to come here and listen to a speech from the victorious Nigel Farage and talk to him.

But neither of those things are going to happen; that speech has been cancelled and there’s no sight nor sound of Nigel Farage this morning.

He didn’t turn up to his own political wedding, the declaration of his moment of victory, citing the potential for disruption.

What are we to take from all of this? Well, Farage has sought to get ahead of and take control of a situation he wasn’t in control of - the ongoing investigation by Parliament’s standards commissioner.

That has now resumed, but I think the strategy from Reform was to volunteer to have a by-election in order to be seen to take control of a process.

If there is a process that means there ends up being the potential for another by-election, the way that would happen is by what’s called a recall petition.

That requires people in the constituency to demand a by-election and maybe Reform will hope there isn’t that demand from people here if they feel they’ve been through the process already.

That may or may not be the case, there’s lots of hypotheticals down the track.

But I think that was their strategy in volunteering for this by-election rather than it being forced upon them.

The bigger picture context is that Reform is under pressure at the moment because of this bounce that Labour and Andy Burnham are having - let’s see how long-lasting or not that is as we head into the political autumn.

COVID vaccines did not contain fetal body parts or fetal tissue.

The kernel of truth is that fetal-derived cell lines have been used in vaccine research, development, production, or testing. These are laboratory-grown descendants of cells obtained from pregnancies terminated decades ago. Researchers don't repeatedly obtain fetal tissue to maintain these cell lines.

In biomedical research, BLT mice are “humanized” laboratory mice. BLT stands for bone marrow–liver–thymus. Human cells/tissues are implanted into immunodeficient mice so that the animals develop components of a human immune system. “Sandwich” describes the physical arrangement of the tissue implanted in the mouse.

McGuire explains none of this in the quote, which makes it sound insane adding to its factually inaccuracy.

Here's a political conundrum to think about.
In the 2024 General Election Clacton had 78,703 registered voters.
The turnout was 58.4%.
That equates to 45,963 people voting, [45,962.552].
32,740 registered voters didn’t vote.
Farage got 46.2% of the votes cast. A total of 21,225 votes.
21,225/78,703 is 26.9 % of the total registered voters.
The majority of registered voters, in Clacton, did not vote for Farage.
73% of the registered voters did not vote for him.
Statistically he is not liked by the majority of registered voters.
His "victory" was very much a hollow one.
It is incorrect to say that the people of Clacton love him.
Why is it then, that the Media sell him as "The Man of The People" when almost three-quarters of the registered voters, in the Constituency he represents, have no time for him?
Does anyone know what the Rules are if all the registered voters in a Constituency do not vote?
The madness of the current UK electoral system is that, using Clacton as an example, if only one candidate stands, and only one vote is cast, that candidate will be elected with 100% of the votes cast.
Even though 0.0012705996% of the registered voters enacted the Suffrage.
If no one stands against Farage, and the turnout is the same, at 58.4%, and Farage gets 46.2% of the votes cast, his victory will not be a "Ringing Endorsement", as only 26.9 % of registered voters in the constituency will have voted for him.
IMHO this is why, when percentages are reported, it should be a statutory requirement to state the percentage of what, the whole is.

Farage hasn't weakened us; he's given us the keys to our own house. The "harm" is coming from an establishment that refuses to use those keys, choosing to moan about Brussels instead of trading with the world. @realDonaldTrump

A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS. He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!

Trump's comments about Reiner are shocking

Anthony Zurcher
North America correspondent

Donald Trump has made his share of derogatory and callous statements about his critics and political adversaries over the course of his 10 years in the national political spotlight. He has reached a point where comments that would once be headline-generating controversies if uttered by an American leader now barely register a ripple.

Trump’s Truth Social post attributing Rob Reiner’s death to his "Trump derangement syndrome" – suggesting that the famous Hollywood director and actor’s political views somehow contributed to his possible murder – is still shocking in its brazenness given the lack of evidence so far from police.

Trump’s statement comes in the wake of efforts by his own administration – and some conservatives – to punish anyone on the left who suggested the assassination of Charlie Kirk was deserved or a consequence of his at times divisive political views.

Trump, whose approval numbers have dropped substantially in recent months, is in danger of being out of step with a public that may expect – or hope for – expressions of empathy or grace from their president, even when a tragedy involves an outspoken critic.

At least today, they will get neither.
