On this day in 2016, Phyllis Schlafly died. She blocked ERA ratification in the 70s & 80s, in part by denying the persistence of discrim against women. Here’s an article where I explore how Schlafly created a playbook that anti-feminists have followed since. #WeTheMen papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

“The U.S. military never targets civilians.” Remarkable that U.S. military spokespeople still use this line given the boat strikes. Of course the U.S. military targets civilians. The question is whether they did so in this situation.

Vladeck on the Court Against the Courts
Stephen I. Vladeck (Georgetown University Law Center) has posted The Supreme Court, October 2025 Term—Foreword: The Court Against the Courts (140 Harv. L. Rev. (forthcoming Nov. 2026)) on SSRN. Here is the abstract: The Supreme Court sits atop a judicial system on which it is deeply dependent. It lacks the capacity to superintend more than a fraction of the cases filed each year, and it relies on the “inferior” courts beneath it to develop records, sharpen issues, and enforce compliance with coercive orders.

Jon Finer, Biden’s deputy national-security adviser said that, for both Hamas and Israel, “civilian harm was not a side effect but part of the strategy.” The U.S., he said, “shouldn’t tolerate wars in which civilian harm is a goal, [or] allow our weapons to be used for that purpose.”

The Supreme Court just launched one of the largest attacks on immigrants in modern American history. Thousands of Haitians and Syrians now risk losing the right to live and work in the country they call home.

This decision will cause enormous pain across the five boroughs. Here in New York, it falls hardest on our Haitian community, one of the largest in the country, alongside Syrian families.

I joined labor leaders with 1199SEIU, elected officials, and advocates to send a clear message to immigrant New Yorkers: You belong here. We will not turn our backs on you.

The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs will share additional information and resources soon. If you have questions about your status or need legal assistance, call our Immigration Legal Support Hotline at 800-354-0365.
