I spent my time mostly not coding at our Maine van camp, but I cracked a couple beers and hammock camped one night and worked by the fire “for fun”, and I must say it felt rad.

I know people laud RBG but WTF is this?
Quote from NYT, “Still, the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, just a few years later, provides a clue: Her Supreme Court papers went, a her direction, to the Library of Congress on the condition that no case file would be opened until every justice involved in the matter had died, a restriction that could lock away many documents for decades.”

I want to contribute 3D models to social platforms like MakerWorld but the whole reason I have a 3D printer is so that I can make very niche things that I could never buy and therefor would be of no use to anyone else. Like a shitty little latch for this janky cabinet I slapped together.

You might not like it, but this is what peak ergonomics looks like.
Add from the Wideluxx camera website where the person is holding the camera in just the strangest way I've ever seen a camera held before, leading me to ask if this camera requires this kind of hold to shoot its panoramas, and if so.......why?

I continue to be baffled by @github.com's decision to collapse "large" diffs in PRs, including this +95/-168 file, which doesn't seem large to me? It's like it's trying to make me miss the most important changes.
A close-up of the diff count on a file I'm reviewing for a pull request on GitHub.com, with 95 lines added and 168 lines removed, that GitHub has preemptively collapsed and requires clicking a "Load Diff" button to show. Some explainer text says "Large diffs are not rendered by default."

Great Blizzard of 1888 vs Blizzard of 2026. Clinton & Fulton, Brooklyn.
Slide image by Adrian Vanderveer Martense from Center For Brooklyn History, showing a horse-drawn carriage on the corner of Clinton and Fulton, with huge snow drifts on either side.My photo from today from what I believe is the same vantage, looking southbound down Clinton from the NE corner of Clinton x Fulton. Large, though notably smaller, snowdrifts adorn the corners of the frozen street.

Having a real "dead internet" day
Screenshot snipper from my Spotify feed for a single called "You" by someone named "Spencer Murphs". It's listed as "Getting buzz" with "Sponsored recommendation" in small text underneath. It has absolutely atrocious, suspiciously tasteless album art...Looking at "Spencer Murphs" discography I see 3 singles: "You", "Rev Up The Engine", and "Pacific Highway". All with similar but otherwise thoughtless and tasteless album art...Googling around for "Spencer Murphs" surfaced someone named "Spencer Murphy" that was a bassist, but no one who went by this name, other than @spencer.murphs on Instagram whose profile is dedicated to these 3 singles so far. This screenshot shows a Reel from their profile of a AI generated video of a bear in a beanie and a flannel surfing, in the style of Studio Ghibli, with "Spencer Murphs" song "Rev Up The Engine" playing. The bear is joined by a femme-coded bear, also surfing, later in the Reel. The Reel has 5 comments, all deleted. The profile has some nondescript, vaguely musician-related images as well. This screenshot shows an image of a guitar pedal, posted without any caption or context. A clear bot account named @raphopday comments on the image with "THIS IS fire 🔥 send".

Just a couple bots cruising the interwebs together. I hate it here.

I get made fun of for having “fuck Robert Moses” on the tip of my tongue all the time. Well TIL that the very idea of NYC community boards were a response to the autocratic control of the Urban Renewal movement, formed by a pilot program in 1951. Fuck Robert Moses, democracy rules lmao

Love it when different-sounding artists do similar things with their album art
"Some Rap Songs" by Earl Sweatshirt. A simple photo of the artist smiling and looking above the camera, but taken in a long exposure while zooming or panning, distorting his face into something like a goblin"The Art of Loving" by Olivia Dean. A photo of the artist resting her head on the back of her hand and smiling with her eyes closed, in something like a daydream look. The photo is slightly out of focus and taken with a long exposure while moving, warping her face in a woozy and strange way.

I'm excited by the prospect of declarative, JS-free tooltips by combining the new Interest Invoker API with the Anchor Positioning and Popover APIs, but it seems like the popover property doesn't work with anchor positioning ☹️. Even MDN shows overflow here: developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/W...
Screenshot of the demo from the MDN docs showing a tooltip using the interest invoker and popover APIs, which contains two buttons in the upper-left corner of the demo area. I am hovering the first button, and the tooltip is appearing below it using the anchor positioning API. However, it is being cut off and is not doing the most important thing (in my opinion) that the anchor positioning API affords: positioning without overflow. This is not corrected by making the body "position: relative" in the playground.

The fact that GitHub degrades to viewing one file at a time on large PRs is hella jarring. I don't think it'd be so bad if other normal things continued to work like auto-advancing to the next file after you mark the current one as read, or selecting multiple lines to comment on, but they don't.
An admittedly enormous PR for our Sketch Mode revamp first pass, which stands at a +27,810 and -827 diff line count, with a warning message that says "Due to the large number of changes in this pull request, only one file is being shown at a time."

The update footnotes at the end of "An app can be a home-cooked meal" fill my heart with joy. www.robinsloan.com/notes/home-c...
The end of the blog post "An app can be a home-cooked meal" by Robin Sloan, discussing his "home-cooked messaging app" for his family, BoopSnoop.

This messaging app I built for, and with, my family, it won’t change unless we want it to change. There will be no sudden redesign, no flood of ads, no pivot to chase a userbase inscrutable to us. It might go away at some point, but that will be our decision. What is this feeling? Independence? Security? Sovereignty?

Is it simply … the feeling of being home?

Update, February 2022: Two years later, my family still uses BoopSnoop every day. I have added one (1) feature, at my mother’s request.

Update, February 2023: Yep, still using it every day!

Update, February 2024: Still booping. Still snooping. TestFlight build 26.

Update, February 2025: I have changed literally nothing in the app, and it’s glorious. TestFlight build 30!

I think I missed that @mta.info was switching back to the Vignelli style for its maps. Didn’t I read somewhere that NYers preferred to know the geographical relationships over the diagrammatic look?

It takes your multiple cursors/selections and vertically aligns them. It's niche enough that I probably won't ever use it, but it made me feel like the selections concept they've made has power.

Fort Greene Park used to be called Washington Park. My review of that name change, 137 years out: 👍🏻. Map from 1887 archived here: web.archive.org/web/20140719...
Zoomed-in section of the 1887 map of Brooklyn showing what is clearly modern Fort Greene Park labeled as Washington Park, which explains why the street to the east of the park is even today called "Washington Park", which has baffled me. We really couldn't name enough things after Washington, could we?

Mexico City had a Feminist Action movement reported on by the Brooklyn Eagle in 1944. Among other roles in the war effort, the women were calling for the right to work as streetcar conductors. bklyn.newspapers.com/image/685896...
Short article titled "Mexican Women Want to Drive Streetcars":

Mexico City—Women may soon become streetcar conductors in
Mexico City, if the plan submitted by Mrs. Celia Ramirez of Feminine Action to Gov. Javier Rojo Gomez of the Federal District receives consideration.

The pretty young woman who heads Feminine Action and represents her group on the Governor's civilian defense council said the Streetcar
Conduetors Union already had agreed to teach a class of women to drive
streetcars, and the only thing holding up the plan was the governor's approval.

Feminine Action likewise wants its women to receive military and flying training and radio and telegraph instruction, so that they can step into those jobs as part of their "bit" toward the war effort. Governor Rojo Gomez has promised to give Mrs. Ramirez's suggestions an early answer.

Rust simply uses too many turbofish. How do I know? Because when I grep for conflict markers our Rust types sometime show up
My NeoVim code editor with a jumplist of all my conflict markers, which are denoted by a ton of ">" characters in a row. I only searched for 4, my mistake, because some of our Rust types are four generics deep, like "Arc<tokio::sync::Mutex<mpsc::UnboundedReceiver<Result<(), KclError>>>>". I'm only kidding this is fine Rust is a neat language.

Oh I get it, the administration’s waiting until after the mayoral election to come to my town in force. Never forget that NYC was doing pretty well crime-wise before. Not that “dangerous cities” are more constitutional to fight a “war from within” with than safe cities.
Screenshot of The Intercept’s reporting on the recent military meeting:

Trump used his address to take aim at cities he claimed "are run by the radical left Democrats," including San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.
"We're going to straighten them out one by one. And this is going to be a major part for some of the people in this room," he said. "That's a war too. It's a war from within." He continued, "We should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military."

"We will be a fighting and winning machine," Trump said during a stream-of-consciousness address that meandered from sleepy word salads to tirades about tariffs, President Barack Obama's ability to quickly descend stairs, President Joe Biden and the autopen, the press, his own supposed…

Montreal’s bike infra really is in a different league than NYC. The bagels are in the same ballpark too, although I’ll take ours almost any day.
View from me driving while my partner rides up front in a Jimmy model front-loading cargo tricycle provided by Montreal rental app Mulo. We are stopped at a red light in an unprotected bike lane with a cyclist ahead, a cyclist crossing the intersection, and bike infra everywhere. At least 5x more bike locking stations, dedicated cycle traffic signals, and more.My partner and I comparing our Fairmount bagels, one of the two most famous spots in Montreal. We are agog at the butter applied atop the unsliced, untoasted bagels, and I am enjoying my “everything” bagel’s local name of “all dressed”.

Everyone should ask Mr. Cuomo if he feels guilty for the 1,141 homeless families he could have helped house for a year in apartments like Mr. Zohran’s with the money from his losing primary campaign. Does he feel comfortable wasting more money like this? www.thecity.nyc/2025/06/26/c...
$31.5 million in Cuomo’s primary campaign spending divided by 12 times Mamdani’s $2,300 rent equals 1141.3 imaginary New York families that could be housed for a year. Some of them probably are veteran single mothers too, now that I’m making that up.
