Houses can be built on floodplains despite failing safety test, says high court Can’t believe we are still doing this! The elderly owners of the 3 houses on the old flood plain where I live have been flooded twice and now can’t sell or get affordable insurance. Madness.

I have some sympathy with Monty Don but as the garden no longer needs to be ‘camera ready’ 2 full time gardeners seems rather a lot. The bones of the garden are obviously excellent. Time to establish a more relaxed semi-wild approach for the spaces between perhaps?

The RNLI has said the abuse of volunteers in Portsmouth has forced it to close the lifeboat station there and stop operating since September 10. Nearby stations have been providing cover to the area instead. One of the UK's largest coastal cities without a lifeboat because of the far-right.
