Really excited to share the latest results from the Bipolar Exome (BipEx) consortium! We analyzed rare coding variation in 64,435 people with bipolar disorder and 168,101 controls across 22 countries, identifying 13 genes at exome-wide significance. 🧵 1/n www.medrxiv.org/content/10.6...

Rare coding variation implicates thirteen genes in bipolar disorder across 232,536 individuals from global populations
Bipolar disorder (BD) is highly heritable, yet the contribution of rare coding variation remains incompletely characterized. We analyzed sequencing data from 64,435 individuals with BD and 168,101 con...

Of course, this comes at a very convenient (sarcasm) time when the public trust in and respect of science and scientists is precipitously deteriorating. The question we must answer now is how do we survive the tidal wave that is hurling at us?!

After all, why train scientists for 10-15 years to do something an AI stack will be able to do in a couple of hours. And for far less money.

It's been only 3 years since the 1st LLM model is released, we already have something like this. I fear the scientist model as it existed this past couple of decades is effectively dead in less than 10 years.

Both camps commit to an essence and declare psychopathology to be more or less of it, with the symptom as its surface-level manifestation. But a single symptom is the meeting point of multiple processes, not the expression of one.
000
Franjo Ivankovic, PhD @franjo.us · 20/09/2026
The pattern isn't coincidental: commit to one thing underneath, and continuity and process-primacy follow automatically. Both then check out empirically, which feels like confirmation of the entire system. The initial commitment thus seems to earn its keep, making it so hard to abandon.

Franjo Ivankovic, PhD @franjo.us · 20/09/2026
Funnily enough, some 50 years later, Insel and the modern biomedicalists come to the same two conclusions, continuity of psychopathology and the primacy of the processes underlying a symptom, yet make a similar error of reduction, this time to neurocircuitry (RDoC).

Where they went wrong was reducing it all to one thing: a basic psychosocial process of adaptation to environment.

Franjo Ivankovic, PhD @franjo.us · 20/09/2026
Menninger and other psychoanalysts of the mid-20th century had a right idea on two issues: 1. psychopathology is not discontinuous or discrete, and 2. processes underlying the symptom matter.

If we want to prioritize learning, then we must reevaluate how we teach and evaluate knowledge and, crucially, how we conceptualize productivity. Anything else is beating a dead horse.

Franjo Ivankovic, PhD @franjo.us · 18/09/2026
AI this, AI that... Academia needs to ask itself one simple question: should we prioritize productivity or learning?! If we want to prioritize productivity, then AI must be integrated at every level of academic work.

And how did that help anything?! They'll just be replaced by MAGA syncopats who will make it all even worse. In fact, reasonable people resigning is what they're counting on, because that leaves absolutely no resistance within the system.

Yeah, so we don't have a choice but to live in this here system. And we can either make it gradually bearable or just let it spin into an even bigger crapshoot than it already is. And it can always get worse.

You cannot go more left by removing yourself as a constituent of a major party. The reason the GOP went further right is to pander to their most loyal voter bloc. The most loyal Dem voter bloc are centrists and milquetoast libs, at the moment -- so that's whom they'll pander to.

Also, if you read the article, it was not her making that argument, it was one of many attorneys in her department at the time, who, and I know this will come as a shocker, do not run every single argument they would ever present in court by her.

Tell that to conservatives, who party line voted from the center- to far-right party. There are only two (electable) parties in the US, you can either participate and help shift the Overton window OR not participate and help shift the Overton window. And not choosing to participate is still a choice

You can always look up her voting record while she was a senator, you know that, right? She has a more progressive voting record than Bernie Sanders.

Depressingly there is more talk in many places about race and ethnicity, and how certain visible characteristics - most obviously skin colour - define people. This is squarely in the identity discussion; ie, people defining their own identity via these visible characteristics

Recent funding cuts have affected all levels of science, but as we learned from the effects of the pandemic, early career researchers are likely to be the most vulnerable.

I mean you could argue labs could use sundry funds to cover it, but they are hanging onto those for dear life right now because they might have to use them to pay salaries in the current climate. It's not just this data repo that lost the funding.

Labs are not for profit organizations, they don't have some magical money waiting around, unless they specifically asked for it when they applied for the grants that fund them.
