Thanks for sharing this. It does lend a bit of context to how we "met" on bsky as well.

For some, oh, these are merely dashes, long dashes. But those who know, those with trained eyes, those with long-standing experience know, and they know well; these are dashes from the Land of Em. I don't write like AI, IT WRITES LIKE ME AND THEY WILL RUE THE DAY THEY STOLE FROM ME.

I wanted to try carbon-filtering vodka, so I wanted to find the nastiest vodka to work from. It should have: * Russian imagery * fake-Cyrillic font * plastic, opaque bottle. We found one that had a bear, in a gray plastic bottle, and that bear wore a ushanka. Did the trick nicely.

Whaaaaat, did it move forward? Did it happen? I literally added it to my wishlist early September, 2020.

I had a lay down and ten minutes or so later, my vision gradually restored. There was naught but a scorch mark where the bulb had been. There but for the grace of god or somesuch, eh? I was nine years old when I had my first FAFO incident and I took process a whole lot more seriously thereafter.

I had my own and once I decided to dismantle a cube into its components. Each bulb had probably a dozen (or more?) meters of very fine magnesium wire. I set one off with a AA battery. And then I set one off with 120 V mains. I literally went blind.

They often show up doing the AV Undercover series, where bands pick a song and cover it. I quite liked their cover of "Carry On My Wayward Son". My sister, whose taste in music is nowhere near as aggressive as mine, very did not. That will give you the safest means of dipping toes in the GWAR pool.

Just finished "Quantum Void" yesterday. I resent the use of "punk" as a genre adjective, but this game is so very CRT-punk. CRT monitors on everything, C 1541 drive noises, mechanical keyboard clatters. Explore desolate ships and unravel a techo-mystery, with optional VR for extra spice.
Quantum Void title screen. Main menu options shown on a simulated CRT monitor.

GWAR is a hardcore punk/heavy metal-adjacent "art" band that have, over 30 years, built up an enormous mythology. In short, they're based in Antartica, have raised an army of pengiuns, and seek the destruction of Earth. They're pretty fun but a bit like marmite. Those who like them like them a lot.

Is it you vs. GWAR? You have picked some strong opposition.

Your cutoff date for this "AI switch" is about 2023, give or take a year to either side.

Baaaaack in the day, computer-controlled opponents were called AI, but they're not "AI" in the sense we use the term today. It's like bicycles and cargo planes, they're both vehicles but one is vastly more expensive, complex and overkill for short-range commuting.

François T. Déjeuner @francoisdejeuner.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Neat. But not "AI" in the context of large language models, IP theft, water waste, etc. And I'd bet money it's just conventional algorithms, and certainly hand-written.
110
François T. Déjeuner @francoisdejeuner.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Honest question: Are you suggesting the alien is controlled by a neural net or a simpler algorithm and not conflating "comptuer controlled opponent" with "large language model"?

It's a real reach (esp. since I don't have VR) but somebody supposedly got Operation Tango working with VR rigs, it is... adjacent to this game in vibe, and it wouldn't cost you a thing to try if you know somebody who has it. And you do know somebody.

Aaw. I've got one sitting unused (Saitek X-52, not a superb one by any means) since we've put a certain complex spaceship game to bed. I had found a mod but it was slopcoded AND breaks multiplayer compatibility too, apparently.

It would be unseemly going down a list of 1940's... "personalities" and rate their ability to stand up to me in a brawl, so I won't. But I did think about it long enough to post this. And I bet Hegseth's never once swung a fist.

Oh is that what that was? A friend had posted some "Post your favourite elf" and I posted, like Rewdalf Cortez, most assuredly not an elf (and explaining will be nonsense and take several bsks), got me a "YESSS" by an attractive girl whose account I didn't investigate and forgot about until now.

I get into these "words as commonly used" versus "strict definition" arguments with my wife; fun ones, mostly. "Volatile" gets me wound up. I'm with you. My wife would not be, in the case of "decimate".

An article on CBC was handwringing about the horrors of selling e-scooters that could go over 50 km/hr. And then, breathlessly, mentioning some could do 120. I sat bolt upright and annoyed the missus with my sudden enthusiasm for e-scooters. Now I need to book time at Mosport...

iRACING. Haha, I mean, I'm completely serious, but I think "agonizingly detailed simulationist motorsport" may not be your thing. But it is #1 for me. Elite Dangerous was #2. Yeah, lots of laser pew, but you could do space trading or explore the realistically-far corners of the galaxy.

Let's just do one ourselves. We'll call it "Movie." It will have Plot. We may need some Actors. And then we re-release it a few times. When that well is dry, we'll make a sequel, Movie 2. And then in five years, remaster Movie.

"Cut half your adjectives," Montrith's writing professor advised. Those adjectives fetch up in this novel. The novel gets bigger by the year.

You have no idea how bad this novel was. So I will try and help. I read this. I read this bit, and many others like it. What on earth is going on?
CHAPTER V.

Our hopes when elevated to that standard of ambition which demands unison may fall asunder like an ancient ruin. They are no longer fit for construction unless on an approved principle. They smoulder away like the ashes of burnt embers, and are cast outwardly from their confined abode, never more to be found where once they existed only as smouldering serpents of scorned pride.

There was this old software that could swap out faces for other, synchronized faces. It didn't use AI, but attempts to find this software have not gone well for me. I'm also trying to limit the amount of Canadian I put out, the world can't handle too much.

In the old days, cleaning brass was difficult work. If guests were coming by, you put the best, clean brass on the top, and it was said to be "top brass" or your best work. The dirtier brass was put on the bottom of the stack and the worst was "bottom brass", as hidden as you could.

Challenges like, "Make some dogs to reflect the whimsies of His Royal Highness, who really likes his dogs." Or just do your own thing. This was my take. It's called "Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts".
A picture of several dogs, drawn in the style of marginalia. One wears a cape and a crown and hefts a large bone as a scwepter. Another wears a monk's robes, holds a wine glass and a pipe and seems remarkably relaxed. A third wears a purple pointed hood and seems perplexed. A fourth reclines on a luxurious pillow. Finally, a dog and a cat appear to be about ready to start a slapfight behind a block of incoherent script-like scribbles.

I know you don't do computer games, but what would you say if I told you I have one that's literally about making marginalia?
