Almost got to respect this comment in response to Labour potentially raising taxes on banks. I don’t particularly want to pay 40% on my earnings and would prefer to spend the cash on gin and cashmere. That’s not really relevant to HMRC or a functioning society, babe!
When asked about how much the banking industry might be able to absorb in terms of tax rises, the head of policy at TheCityUK, John Godfrey, said banks “do not want to get into debating the menu of taxation. The fact is that we don’t want to eat in that restaurant.”

I’m so sorry to share such very sad news. Beautiful Mabel has passed away. It was sudden and we’re of course heartbroken. I know how many of you adored her from afar. 5 feels no age at all but it’s a real comfort to know she spread an incredible amount of love in such a short spell of time.

Guardian reader Kitty out here bravely keeping it real:
They are both being very boring and possessive over this holey old tent. Do neither of their boyfriends have tents?! Surely one of the few perks of having a boyfriend is they have access to tents? But as Ruth has had this one cluttering her home then Ava just needs to be gracious and relinquish ownership.

I’m on Opinion newsletter duty this morning and I wanted to start with a few words on The Telegraph’s toxic “How having a disability became cool” article.
Back in 2024, I wrote about “sickfluencers” – a rightwing moniker for disabled people who use social media to help others apply for benefits. Recently, I’ve noticed the term has expanded to include women who commit the crime of … using a mobility aid in public. This week, the Telegraph ran a piece claiming young women are “turning chronic illness into a lifestyle trend”, including by not working. The headline? “How having a disability became cool.”

It’s hard to think of a nastier narrative. You can say that the writers and editors publishing this stuff are just ignorant of disability, but I struggle to believe it. It feels like wilful ignorance: repeating tropes that fuel an agenda casting doubt on disabled people and the state’s duty to support us if we need it.Readers who use mobility aids often tell me about the impact of seeing these stories spread online; a growing sense of shame that eats at the stomach until one day, they put their cane back in the cupboard and walk to Tesco in pain. Or they don’t go out at all. Someone should be ashamed in all of this, sure, but it’s not disabled readers.

Fantastic to see tomorrow’s exclusive on “the right to go abroad” the second most read on The Guardian’s whole website. Thank you to all the disabled people who helped get this story to print. It wouldn’t have been possible without care users and grassroots groups willing to speak out.

Good on Alan Milburn - who’s leading the government review into youth unemployment - for saying the quiet part out loud.
Milburn dismissed “myths” about 18- to 24-year-olds being a “snowflake generation”, saying: “The problem isn’t shortage of effort on the part of young people. It’s a shortage of opportunities, jobs, support.”

He added: “There are two views about [the rise in youth ill health]. You can either say it’s fake or you can decide its real. It’s a real phenomenon. So we’ve got to deal with it and we have got to adjust our systems to deal with it.”

This is the point that should be made over and over again in the prison overcrowding row. The focus is on releasing violent male prisoners but the majority of female prisoners are not a threat to the public - and should always have been given community orders.
He added that as well as building 14,000 new prison places by 2031, he had asked the justice secretary to review the indefinite sentences handed out between 2005 and 2012, to consider more early release for female prisoners given the lower risk they pose, and to look into faster returns of foreign national offenders to their country of origin.

Bloody hell, have Labour started talking to disabled people?? Burnham says any move to allow assisted dying should not happen until the government funds better social and palliative care.
Burnham says any move to allow assisted dying should not happen until better palliative care in place
Q: Do you support assisted dying?

Burnham said he was not opposed to this being debated. But he went on:

Personally, I think there’s something that needs to happen first, and that’s the fixing of the funding of palliative care and social care.
I think it is very challenging to introduce that wider debate in a context of people not receiving that care and having peace of mind about that care.

Frances Ryan @francesryan.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
It’s a relief to see Burnham - with help from Ed Davey and the Lib Dems - mentioning social care fees paid by disabled people. Politicians and media focus on the elderly with assets but any review must also address the poverty-inducing fees forced on working age disabled people by local councils.
Burnham says he agreed with what Ed Davey said in his Today interview this morning about the pressures carers are under.

We see people struggling in in their homes looking after a partner or a relative.
It can break people if they’re kind of left without that support that they need.
In fact, it does break people, and that needs to be recognised.
It needs to be recognised that people can see everything they’ve worked for wiped out by the costs of care. Hundreds of thousands of pounds can just disappear paying for care.
Adults with disabilities will say that they face very unfair care charges just to live, just to live their life. That needs to be recognised.

And this is why disabled and older people in England are currently forced to sit in their own urine because they can’t get to the toilet.
Tories and Reform UK tell Burnham they will fight any plan to reform adult social care involving tax rises

Come for the political and cultural analysis, stay for me ranting about how much I’m being charged for smart curtains.
Hughes also made the point that many disabled people are priced out of tech: “It costs thousands of pounds to make your home truly smart”.

It’s something that Frances told me too: “It recently cost me £20k to build an accessible bathroom and I was just quoted £1.8k for a smart curtain rod.”

These sums are out of reach to many: in research published earlier this month by the Disability Poverty Campaign Group, nearly three-quarters of respondents said their income does not consistently cover the cost of the food they need to stay healthy.

“I’m lucky I have a job to fill in the extra costs – and the developments in tech are incredible – but it’s striking how much cash disabled people have to find just to live like everyone else. Non-disabled people spend their spare income on a holiday. We spend it on being able to open our curtains.”

Damn, I broke the cardinal rule of being a Guardian columnist: desperately claim you are in fact working class. *In my defence*, a reader commented that loads of people on disability benefits are lying and I wouldn’t understand that because I’m middle class.
I know it’s a crime to type this as a Guardian columnist but - whisper it - FWIW I’m working class. I also receive Pip and had DLA since I was a child (when my family couldn’t afford a car if that wins working class points!). I also know the system from fifteen years of writing about it, including a book. That includes knowing fraud rate for disability benefits is barely 1%.

Given that we asked for this by-election in the first place, it’s only right that we pay for it.

My colleagues on the environment desk are providing Brits with everything they need during a heatwave.
In many European countries, meteorologists describe nights with temperature minimums above 20C as “tropical”, while in Spain, which is more familiar with extreme heat, they call nights above 25C “equatorial” or “torrid”. In recent years, they have informally introduced a new category for night-time temperatures above 30C: “hellish”.

I’m Frances Ryan, Guardian columnist, and this week I’ve been thinking about the scandal of disabled people being forced to live in hospital, progressives uniting to stop Reform UK in Makerfield, and why smoking is apparently cool again. Don’t worry: I’ve also found time to start the new series of Rivals.Who I’ve been cheering on | As a Leicester City-supporting family, these are not good times: one minute you’re winning the Premiership, the next you’re relegated to League One. My dad and uncle have been comforting themselves with the Netflix documentary Untold UK: Jamie Vardy. Meanwhile, I’ve been previewing Dear England – the BBC adaptation of the Olivier award-winning play about Gareth Southgate’s reign as England manager – for today’s What’s On mag. I found myself cheering on a man to take a penalty he missed 30 years ago. Who says football is a cruel sport?

UPDATE: Starmer is beyond parody.
According to Sky’s Beth Rigby, the mood at cabinet was not quite as supportive towards Keir Starmer as Jenny Chapman implied. (See 11.39am.) Rigby says:

This coming from a government source. A less supportive assessment of cabinet meeting
“Keir said in Cabinet that he wouldn’t discuss the elections or his leadership, and that he will only speak to cabinet ministers about that individually. Then after the meeting he refused to see Cabinet ministers individually”
