Honestly the only other TV announcer I've seen with that type of voice are these "coming up next" bits from American Movie Classics featuring a fake radio announcer... and yes, that *is* JK Simmons as the radio announcer (original by Matt Hinrichs - www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVq5...)

The announcer for PHL 17 here in Philly from 1988 to 1990 has one of the more unique voices I've ever heard from a voiceover guy. Very old-timey radio in a way that network booth announcers weren't. Still haven't found a name, though... (Original from Joe's Video Archives - youtu.be/pbeu8Cik4gE)

You know what else Disney owns that explores elements from the original source material of one of their classic films? That stars a beloved anchor who recently passed away and that they can throw on their service for free?
The cover to a VHS of “Fox’s Peter Pan and the Pirates,” which Disney has owned since 2001

43 years ago yesterday, the first syndicated episode of Wheel of Fortune premiered. I cannot emphasize enough how big Wheel of Fortune was during its first decade. The 80s were when first-run syndie shows REALLY blew up, and Wheel would be my "exhibit A" for this, even more than He-Man and Gadget.

I am not even kidding, it is the domino meme
The meme where a guy uses the domino effect starting with a small domino to topple a big domino.

The text on the small domino is "Haim Saban fleeces Michael Eisner for $5 billion" and the text on the big one is "US enables the genocide in Gaza"

Checking links as I finish up this piece for the Patreon, and came across this reminder that you do not hate Haim Saban nearly enough variety.com/2020/politic...
Haim Saban, the media billionaire who is a fixture in Democratic Party fundraising, is organizing a $500,000-per-person fundraiser for Joe Biden next Monday.

Saban has long said he is “a one-issue guy, and my issue is Israel.” In a statement supporting Biden, Saban said the former vice president will “ensure that the strong, bipartisan alliance between the U.S. and Israel remains unshakeable.”

Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of 9/11, which means tomorrow will be the 25th anniversary of the most insane edit I've seen on kids TV. This is how Fox Kids aired "Ransik Lives" on the few stations that ran it. I cannot stress enough, *this is real* From DLJBFan2009: youtu.be/zM0kfx5T-r8

It's Fox Kids day! 36 years ago, on September 8, 1990, Fox Kids went on the air with its very first show - Bobby's World. The network would be the home of many seminal kids shows, from Tiny Toons to Power Rangers to Digimon. Here's the first promo, sourced by Davin Del'osa: youtu.be/7npUWZ_4aB4

This was normal back in the day! They'd usually do a three or four minute spot during major events or as filler, but :30s or :60s most of the time. It's not even the most over the top one they did, there's a 3:00 ad for *their motherfucking radar* (Original by Kalehoff: youtu.be/i7aUTI2tDJE?... )

Fox started up shortly afterwards, so you started seeing WTXF downplayed anyway in favor of “Fox 29” Fox ended up buying the station, but not before it was resold to Paramount Pictures, which resulted in this ID that still breaks my brain a little:
The WTXF Fox 29 ident from 1990, showing the Fox logo, the 29 logo, the station’s calls, and city of license all jumbled into an unholy mess.

To top it all off “A Paramount Station,” in the studio’s famous script font, is underneath.

Strong “CNNBCBS: A Division of ABC” vibes.

I always wondered why WTAF changed Its calls, then I saw this old station ID with the giant logo for TAFt and I’m like “ohhhhh THAT’S why” Taft sold it in 1987, and contractually mandated that the calls be changed. WTXF was chosen, and to this day I still frequently see them misspelled.
The WTAF TV29 station ID from 1985 or so, with the station’s 29 logo on top of a gigantic TAFT Television and Radio Company logo

This all coincides with the ongoing rollout of “SEPTA Metro,” which has relabeled all their subway and trolley routes with color coded letter designations This is the advertising they’ve been running, and I am convinced it was made by someone in the LGBTQ+ community because it’s obvious as hell

Broad Street Line -> [B]

Compare it to the much less legible older design, which uses more colors, various weights of Helvetica, has no large bus icon, and doesn’t label the stop Enjoy the sticker of a well dressed Bugs Bunny checking a SEPTA timetable as a bonus (Philly is awesome)

SEPTA has been redoing their signage for about a year now. They’re I think the first transit facility/agency to use Google’s Roboto as their main font and somehow it works well
The bus stop at Frankford and Girard labeled with the three buses that stop there - the 25 and 5 northbound to the Frankford Transit Center, and the 76 to Rising Sun-Olney.

The 25 part is shaded in “frequent red,” as it is a route that runs every 15 minutes or less on weekdays.

From Cinemark's website: you can bring anything that can hold popcorn and they will fill it for $5

Buckle up, popcorn lovers. Bring Your Own Bucket is returning to a theatre near you. For one day only, we're filling your craziest buckets to the brim (up to 400oz; equal to 2 XL popcorns) for just $5.

I wouldn’t say there was bad blood. There WAS litigation between Fox and Disney, but that was about Fox poaching Disney Afternoon affiliates. Still, that was enough for lawyers to make them put this disclaimer at the start of every episode:
A new and independent series inspired by J.M. Barrie’s original novel “Peter and Wendy”

It cannot be overstated how important Tim Curry was to voice acting as a whole and Fox Kids specifically He was the marquee name in Peter Pan and the Pirates, Fox Kids' flagship that first year, and his performance as Captain Hook is one of the few things that make it worth revisiting

This one's from a Toonami Duel Masters aircheck. The AI was clearly given a prompt for Toonami Robot and it came back looking like something from tokusatsu. The channel for these is here btw - I don't like giving them any attention, but some of these are... woof www.youtube.com/@GroovyRetro...
A thumbnail for some Toonami commercial breaks during Duel Masters. The thumbnail allegedly pictures TOM, the blue-tinted Toonami robot host, but the head is designed to look far more like something from a tokusatsu series.

AI slop thumbnails are becoming a real problem on YouTube. This came up while I was hunting for Fox Kids airchecks. There's *so* much wrong with this one. Not least of which is that WATL is given a hallucinated NBC 36 logo - an affiliation they never had. (This is gonna be a thread.)
A "WATL COMMERCIAL COMPILATION" thumbnail with just so so so much AI bullshit in it. WATL is even given an NBC 36 logo. Not only did the station not use that logo ever, but they were never affiliated with NBC!

Also, I appreciate Weather Channel’s retro mode, but one complaint: where are the gradients?! If you are going to evoke the local forecasts of the 90s, you have to go further than just changing the fonts and icons to the WeatherStar 4000 ones. You need to go all the way, you can’t half ass it.
