While each species has its own identifying features, they all have one thing in common: they can spread quickly, outcompete native plants, damage riverbanks + habitats, + make life harder for the wildlife that depends on healthy rivers. Drop your answers in the comments: what can you spot?

Restoring peatlands helps lock up carbon, boost biodiversity, and build a more climate-resilient landscape for the future. Huge thanks to @networkrail.bsky.social, the MERLIN project, @naturescot.bsky.social, & the Forth Rivers Trust & Forth Rivers Consulting for making this work possible.

Removal of invasive Sitka spruce has also been undertaken, to help the peatland recover naturally. Pools are forming, water is lingering, and the site is beginning to function as a healthy bog once more: exactly what we want to see.

Water that once rushed through artificial drainage grips and carved gullies into local streams is being slowed & spread across the peat surface. Gullies are being carefully reprofiled & revegetated, miles of grips are being zipped and wave-dammed & the ground is getting satisfyingly squelchy again!

❄️ Recent icy conditions across the Forth catchment mean our rivers are at their coldest, with fish conserving energy through winter. Cold, clean, oxygen-rich water helps wildlife thrive year-round. Magnus captured this shot from the River Teith yesterday. How’s your local river looking? Share below!

Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) is one of our more persistent INNS: spreading fast and weakening riverbanks when it dies back in winter. Our team has been out across the Almond and Devon catchments surveying last year’s treatment sites and tracking down new hotspots.
