The maps might be rigged, but our resolve is not. As Justice Kagan said, we cannot let the right to vote become a "dead letter." We stand with the voters of Louisiana and organizers across the country fighting for a future where every voice is heard.

Today’s ruling is a direct assault on the foundation of our democracy and a betrayal of the progress made during the Civil Rights Movement. By gutting what remained of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, this Court has signaled that it is more interested in protecting partisan power than ensuring every American has an equal voice at the ballot box.

In Louisiana v. Callais, the Court has effectively sanctioned racial gerrymandering under the guise of ‘partisan politics,’ creating a nearly impossible legal standard for communities of color to challenge discriminatory maps. Justice Alito’s majority opinion ignores the reality of how race and politics are inextricably linked in the South, essentially telling Black voters in Louisiana and across the country that their right to fair representation is no longer a constitutional priority.

As Justice Kagan noted in her dissent, this decision risks turning Section 2 into a ‘dead letter.’ By demanding proof of ‘intentional discrimination’ while simultaneously allowing states to hide behind ‘partisan goals,’ the Court has given a green light to politicians who wish to choose their voters rather than letting voters choose their leaders.

The For The Future Victory Fund was founded on the belief that the future of our country belongs to the people—all the people. We cannot have a representative democracy if the maps are rigged and the legal tools to fix them are stripped away. We stand in solidarity with the organizers and voters in Louisiana who have fought for years for a map that reflects the diversity of their state.

This decision is a wake-up call. The fight for our democracy now moves from the courtrooms to the ballot boxes and the halls of Congress. We will not be silenced, and we will not stop working to elect leaders who will defend the right to vote and restore the full protections of the Voting Rights Act.
