I'd say a game needs to give a reason to explore. Backtracking just bc thats how the game is designed feels monotonous. Megaman X/X2 did this really well. You would get a new ability, remember a place u could use it, go back and find a light capsule/heart tank, etc. It made revisiting feel rewarding
