Google News has pushed me links to press releases from the White House, now Anthropic. It makes me wonder what other PR is being spoonfed directly to people.

I think speculating on algo changes is probably of limited value in a vacuum. Our narrative framework undermines our ability to parse genuine changes from noticing existing phenomena. But I can't help it. And for what it's worth, I noticed this change before I tied it consciously to the sale.

My TikTok algo is breaking in a weird way post sale. It trends towards conservative coded "bro"/ sports content (NEVER got before), then breaks down into 100% conservative text posts (occasionally seen before). This resets if I wait a little while. Is anyone else experiencing something similar?

Bernie Sanders hinted at a break with the Democratic Party in an email sent out earlier today. If this ends up being more signal than noise, this is a significant moment.

Is all the original Gimlet Spotify-exclusive content still only available on Spotify? I can't tell if this is an indicator that Spotifies podcasting strategy is further losing the plot, or something more intentional.

It's so sad that Gimlet's "Crime Show" got swallowed whole by the memory hole of the Podcast Platform Wars because they kept it as a Spotify exclusive, and it still is?!

Happy ten year anniversary to this amazing essay from Arthur Chu. The reactionary movement that spawned GG continues to metastasize today, and I've send this article to people so many times over the years. It's still worth a read! If you can tell me if Chu is on here or wherever please do.

NYT or WP are covering "campus protests" whereas student media are covering one on their campus. A national story becomes a trend story that flattens the difference between the protests, the people involved, motives, and even administrative response. All of those variances lost in national coverage.

Interesting -- do you know any other examples of these sorts of forms being used during faculty strikes? Is this common for faculty strikes, or new? CSU rolled this out pretty quickly, it begs the question if they are following some kind of template, and if so who's? Would love to hear any thoughts.

CSU is asking students across its 23 campuses if their professors will participate in the CFA strike next week. Some faculty believe it is a systemic effort to dock pay for striking workers. A CSU VP for labor said the forms were only to "gauge the impact" of the strike.

Faculty at San Diego State University are speaking out against a form being pushed to students that asks if their prof will be on strike next week -- claiming it's a way to systemize withholding pay during the work stoppage. Is this happening at any other Cal State? I'd love to know.
