If everything someone believes about a thing is fake, outdated, or presented in bad faith I don't think its that crazy to suspect that their overall conclusions about said thing are also wrong.

Is it a new argument for why a computer can't be conscious or is it the chinese room again

I quite like TUIs because the terminal is from a time where people cared about composable tools/platforms. e.g. you can run a tui inside termux over ssh, or within vim/emacs, whatever. Most gui alternatives don't even care about this at all. If only we lived in the plan9 alternate universe.

I worked for a company that had a special exemption for covid lockdowns so they could get everyone back "In office" technically, but in practice they sent everybody to a mostly empty auxiliary office to work in isolated cubicles on laptops remote desktop-ed into our regular machines?

cargo cult isn't exactly right, its more like being overly fixated on appearances because of how invested people who mostly interface with internal politics are in being perceived to be critical to operations

em @foremphasis.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
really depressing how much energy is spent in companies on stuff that is just absolutely stupid and unnecessary to satisfy cargo cult beliefs of middle management

Humans like designing tiered abstracted systems so that higher levels do not need to worry about how lower ones are implemented, the central dogma is almost the complete opposite of that idea

Kinda nuts the whole system works as well as it does

DNA/RNA is the most insane complicated programming language/machine code ever, its like if punch cards were read stochastically but also bits of the card could break off and do stuff in the computer including modify how other punch cards are read

The good news is I am only a pound or two away from being not (technically) underweight anymore, which should be a good milestone

Ive taken a bit of a medical leave and haven't really used ai much in the past few weeks, interested to get back into playing around with opus 5.5 when I don't feel so crummy

Understandable, sometimes you want state wrapped in a nice interface and it feels better to use something standardized than to roll your own every time. Also if you want to do this and interact with e.g. user input that also uses an actor framework it makes some sense.

Gotta go to the roller rink again I like zipping around in there.

I guess really the benefit is you MUST have a typed interface for each object (the message type it accepts), which is good imo.

Kinda feels like a way to morally permit one to write OOP slop when OOP slop is called for.
110
em @foremphasis.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
The whole thing is a bit more flexible technically, but the tradeoff is its more verbose for like 90% of use cases.
110
em @foremphasis.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Is this better? Beats me. I guess you explicitly have to write a state machine out as well. Is that better? Idk its a little clearer I suppose.
110
em @foremphasis.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
No you see this is not an object its an actor. The difference as far as I can tell is you gotta explicitly pass it a reference to the calling actor to get the result back, instead of leaving that implied.

I suspect its not going to happen but it would be nifty to be part of the first generation of people that live forever. Imagine the "back in my day"s you could pull off.

Thinking about how one would design a post scarcity TCG. I like the mechanics of playing magic but the business model is so fucked and full of perverse incentives. Obviously games like slay the spire solve this by just being single player but I do like playing games against people.

Excited for a future where machines are better than humans at everything, we can finally stop pretending like some activities are inherently more meaningful to spend your time on than others, finally everything can be art.

Nerves are just pipes too if you think about it.
120
em @foremphasis.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Exactly I need more ports to connect the pipes in the walls to the pipes in my body. The in between bits are just inefficient tbh.

em @foremphasis.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I should be able to just put nutrient slurry directly into my bloodstream from a pipe in the wall.

I don't get what the big deal is AI doesn't do anything you can't emulate on a Turing machine.

Who is everybody talking to all the time?
010
em @foremphasis.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Nowadays when you're anywhere in public like 50% of people are on phone/videocalls? When I was a kid it was considered rude to be on a phone call in public.

I'm pretty optimistic that ai making it easy to "just do" anything will actually raise people's standards across the board.

I spent all of lockdown playing a couple games a day
010
em @foremphasis.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I'll not play for year or so and then come back to it and still be about the same 3-4kyu range, seems to stick in the brain pretty well. Daily tsumego helps.
