I hope this is good for you all. Actually, I hope it is good for grassroots, citizen scientists who want to improve their community. I associate Eco-Counter with tools purchased by city governments.

My favorite platform was StoryMaps because all my stories worked better if I could point to a map. StoryMaps (free blogging) got folded back into ArcGIS, so now I have the $100 annual GIS subscription. Inside the $100 GIS suite are website generation tools. Not sure of limitations in your scenario.

I have this discussion with my cat, who hides under the bed whenever there's a gas mower/blower anywhere in the neighborhood. My city has a gas leaf blower ban but doesn't enforce it. Residents need to complain, like the general noise ordinance. So residents use electric, but services all use gas.

I once asked our county transportation engineer if their model can predict a mode shift based on proposed bike infrastructure. After initial bewilderment, they said no, the model doesn't work that way. (What is the model for, if not for predicting the response to a proposed change?)

I sent a video like this to our previous Mayor, except that there was a "your speed is" sign up ahead flashing "SLOW DOWN".

I asked our Mayor to create an ordinance requiring all cameras surveiling public streets to have the same transparency policy as the City. There would also need to be oversight and enforcement, somehow. It won't happen with this Mayor and Council (prosecutor and ex-cop in majority).

Over in Pleasanton, most of the cameras are not owned by the City. They're owned by HOAs and private companies. I assume PPD has access to all of them through the #Flock platform. Without any real oversight, folks in Texas have access, too.

Interesting, here in Pleasanton, a couple of those streets are in our upcoming Master Plan as the "Vision Network." (Because staff told consultant to ignore trails & residential streets.) I assume our SS4A grant application will be denied.

How were they planning to measure travel time to work? Seems like a very individual thing. Are they using aggregate data from Replica based on census tracks?

The local Police chief told me there's a box at the bottom of the pole where the files reside and they never leave that location. Obviously, someone told the chief that. All of you know it's false. The files are in the cloud which means they're on multiple servers. What else were they told? #ALPR

No fewer than a dozen East Bay Regional Park police officers on my Dublin to Walnut Creek iron horse trail and Danville Blvd commute. In a car, on an ATV, on a pedal bike, two motorcycles, and multiple on foot. The focus was in e-bikes they didn't give me any issue.

Reminds me of: archive.strongtowns.org/journal/2019... Traffic Engineers "...will quote industry standards as if they are inviolable laws..." Essentially, there's no NACTO standard for how to paint this, so you're on your own.

Four Ways Traffic Engineers Thwart Public Will
Public officials trying to make their city’s street more humane are often thwarted by the professional engineers giving them advice. If that’s your city, it’s time to make a change.

My city is revising its bike/ped master plan. Consultants just presented draft recommendations. It came out that they were ignoring off-street trails and residential streets because "they're fine". Traffic Engrs seem opposed to low-stress networks. "LTS -1" concept: make LTS 4 streets into LTS 3.

I chatted with my city elected official yesterday. He said #ALPR solved a dramatic local case. He also knows that rogue cops in Bakersfield are tracking their exes. He also knows that there are about 10 city-owned cameras in town and about 70 HOA-owned. The latter gave no transparency policy.

As I understand the Virginia 4th Amendment case, the decision was that it's not quite total surveillance yet so it's fine. That's exactly the boiling frog parable.

🚨 URGENT ACTION ALERT 🚨 This week, Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) funding is on the chopping block. Tell your senators: the transportation bill extension MUST include continued funding for SS4A. Take action NOW: action.bikeleague.org/page/101121/...
Action Alert graphic. A man in an East Coast Greenway cycling jersey holds a sign that says "Bike Lanes Save Lives" next to a bike lane with cyclists riding by. Text overlay: "Urgent: Save Safe Streets and Roads for All Funding. Bikeleague.org/action-center. "Action Alert graphic. White text on a red background: "The Senate has a chance to protect funding for bike lanes and safer roads. They need to hear from you. This week, the Senate will be voting on a short-term extension of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Critically, this proposed extension strips out funding for a key program created in the IIJA: the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.

Safe Streets and Roads for All has made $5 billion over five years directly available to local communities who want to plan for and build safer roads for people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving.

Tell your senators: the continuing resolution must include continued funding for SS4A. Without it, communities will not be able to access critical funding to build safer roads.

My city did a specific Transpo Safety Plan so they could apply for a $25M SS4A grant. I assumed from the beginning that the Feds would deny us the grant for any bike/ped improvement, like elevated cycle tracks. Is that what this means? "No money for bikey stuff"?

From Jed's email - "Brandon was 9 years old when this project was proposed. He was 13 when it was supposed to be built. His whole future is gone because of Baltimore City's inaction." Inexcusable. www.gofundme.com/f/support-fo...
Washington Street was identified in the 2015 Bike Master Plan for a separated bike lane and prioritized in the 2017 Separated Bike Lane Network Plan for installation by 2019.

It took until 2025 to approach final design. In May 2025, community members were told the project could break ground that year.

The Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Commission was told this January the project would be under construction by January 2027. By this May's budget hearing, the project had slipped to a "goal" of Spring 2027 construction.

Brandon was 9 years old when this project was proposed. He was 13 when it was supposed to be built. His whole future is gone because of Baltimore City's inaction.

Same in my town. A protected bike lane next to a middle school was approved in 2018. All those middle schoolers have graduated. The City has changed consultants twice and are revising the plans again. We've probably spent over a million dollars to achieve nothing.

There's enough technology these days to track your eyeballs and know if or how long you look away, or to know if you're drowsy. There's enough technology to lock out phone functions while you are driving. But we don't use it. We've got a 20-inch monitor instead ... halfway across the dashboard.

I often speak in front of City Council to remind them our Municipal Code requires a Level of Service (cars cannot be delayed more than 45 seconds or something) but nothing that says cyclists or pedestrians shouldn't die. One leads to the other.

Pleasanton went through this, for the same reason. I assume it's meant to assure certain minority-majority areas have a good opportunity to elect someone who represents them. Yet somehow, all of Pleasanton's districts have nearly the same demographic split. (And we have five white Council members.)

I live in California where the weather is quite nice year-round and parents drive their kids one mile to/from school. The number of cars idling with the air-conditioning on is crazy. Those drivers are aggressive, too! It's not safe to cycle around them.

My city (suburb in CA, USA), claims 15% of transportation budget goes to bike/ped projects. Other than some $1k crosswalks (special paint) and $10k flashing beacons, I would guess that $500k+ go to consultants to make 300-page plans we never implement.
