Really grateful for Mwenza from @foodandsolidarity.bsky.social repping the north-east and speaking out so clearly about the grim picture of #ukpoverty2026 as a continued political choice, and highlighting the urgent need for collective care and action on issues such as rent control.

There’s a romantic idea that if every neighbourhood grew food, our cities could feed themselves. Why does this idea runs up against land ownership, supermarket power and the way markets are organised, and why small farms alone can’t and won't meet urban need under those conditions?
Volunteers from Food & Solidarity packing fresh fruit parcels, including bananas and oranges, at a community food distribution point. Text overlay reads: ‘Can Small-Scale Growing “Feed the World”?’ with a link to Part 2 of the Food Logistics series. The blog explores whether local small-scale farming can meet urban food needs, and how colonialism, supermarket power, and land ownership shape today’s food system. Food & Solidarity campaigns for housing justice, against child poverty, and for a food system based on solidarity not charity.

❗️NO MORE GROWING UP POOR!❗️We fight for our kids and our communities. We won't be silent while Keir Starmer lies and our Labour MPs hide. Do they think it's right that 1 in 5 kids in the North East live in poverty? That 1 in 5 kids don't get the food they need?
Chloe-Louise Reilly, the Green Party's North East mayoral candidate, smiles while holding a flyer for the "No More Growing Up Poor" campaign. She is wearing a grey hoodie with a green lanyard and is seated in a wheelchair. Behind her, people stand near a banner that reads "DEFEND WELFARE." To the left is a quote of her expressing full support for the campaign, and in the top-right corner is the Food & Solidarity logo.

Text reads 'Food & Solidarity shows the power of communities coming together to support each other and fight for change. No one should have to struggle alone, and grassroots action is vital in challenging the injustices people face - whether it’s housing, immigration, or the right to meet basic needs. As North Tyneside’s Green Party mayoral candidate, I fully support the No More Growing Up Poor Campaign and the work being done to ensure people have dignity, security, and a voice in the fight for a fairer future.'

📢 What changed, Chi? 50% of kids in Newcastle live in poverty! In 2023, @chionwurah.bsky.social asked why the government was making life so hard for kids. But in 2025, with a new government in power, the policies keeping children in poverty are still in place!

On the left, a red-tinted photo of Chi Onwurah from 2023 is paired with a speech bubble that reads: “Why is this Government making it so hard for our kids?” On the right, a blue-tinted 2025 photo of Chi Onwurah appears with a red speech bubble containing a zipper-mouth emoji (🤐), implying silence. A large blue arrow points from the 2023 quote to the 2025 image, with bold text reading: “What changed?” The background features faded images of protest banners, and the years "2023" and "2025" are prominently displayed next to Chi Onwurah’s name.

🚨 Tired of being told “Ah well, there’s nothing you can do”? There’s plenty you can do—but only if you’re organised. Bosses and landlords count on people feeling isolated. That’s why they get away with crap wages, unsafe conditions, and homes falling apart.

No More Growing Up Poor: Breakfast Clubs & The Fight for Real Change Child poverty in the UK is a crisis. The delay of the National School Breakfast Programme to 2026 is yet another failure. While politicians run for photo ops, grassroots groups like Food & Solidarity demand real change.
A digitally edited collage with a bold, urgent style. The background features a blurred image of a school cafeteria with tables and chairs. On the left, there is a historic Black Panther Party sign reading: “FREE BREAKFAST FOR CHILDREN SERVED HERE”, with a black panther symbol underneath. On the right, there is a faded and stylized image of a group of politicians; runners wearing charity sponsorship gear.

Overlaying the image is bold text in white, red, and dark blue:
- “Child Poverty isn’t a PR Stunt. It’s a Crisis.”
- (Red & White): *“1 in 4 children in the UK live in poverty. & Free breakfasts delayed until 2026. Enough is enough.”*
- Bottom Call-to-Action (Dark Blue & White): *“Charity won’t end poverty. Organising will. Join Food & Solidarity.”*

The design visually contrasts grassroots efforts (Black Panther breakfast program) with performative charity (charity runs) to highlight the need for systemic change.

🏆 We’re officially a big issue Changemaker 2025! 🏆 We don’t wait for politicians to fix things—we organise. 🏠 Housing casework & eviction resistance Last year, we fought alongside members facing unlawful evictions and unsafe housing, forcing landlords and the council to take action.
A collage of five images showcases Food & Solidarity's activism:

1. Top image: A large group of people stand outside a modern building, holding a red Food & Solidarity banner and a long photo petition featuring images of members and families.

2. Bottom left: A group of activists in winter clothing stand behind a table covered in a red Food & Solidarity banner. They hold signs and display information about housing and eviction resistance. The ground is covered in snow.

3. Bottom centre: Protesters march outside a large weapons factory, holding a red Food & Solidarity banner. Some carry Palestinian flags.

4. Right centre: Two people laughing, one wearing a green coat, the other in a beige blouse, who is smiling. A wooden deck and stacked food crate are visible in the background.
