It's National Estuaries Week, and Florida has more skin in this game than almost anywhere. 🌾 An estuary is where fresh water meets salt. Brackish, often murky, and far more productive than it looks from a boat ramp.

The coast is our classroom and it's changing! Some of Florida's best K-12 field sites could see regular flooding within a generation. How should we train and equip marine educators for that? 🌊 #FMSEA

This was my PhD! 🦑🧪 1. Roots that grow into the Caribbean seafloor are bare, because sea stars eat the stuff that grows on them 2. Roots that dangle into the water get covered in stuff and are great habitat 3. Fertilizer -> more leaves, so we need to protect roots specifically, not just trees
A juvenile grunt hides amongst a sponge growing on an underwater red mangrove rootA stingray moseys along underneath red mangrove roots dangling into the waterA juvenile butterflyfish hides behind underwater red mangrove roots made more complex by sponges and clams growing on the rootsA juvenile snapper looks at the camera from between underwater red mangrove roots made into better hiding spots by sponges with complex structure

You think a mangrove is a tree. The fish in its roots disagree. 🌿 Florida's red mangrove prop roots shelter juvenile snook and sheepshead, grass shrimp, sponges, oysters, and tunicates. A nursery, an apartment building, and a water filter, all at once. #FMSEA

Global shark and ray populations are down 71% since 1970. Humans kill about 100 million sharks a year. Florida logged 11 bites in 2025, below its 5-year average. This Shark Awareness Day (July 14), the numbers say more than the headlines. 🦈 #FMSEA

Florida's reef isn't just struggling. It's functionally losing species that it may never get back. Those weren't rare corals. They were the ones who built the reef. 🪸 Save this for your next unit on climate, marine ecosystems, or local land use. #FloridaReef #CoralBleaching #MarineScience

The research is clear: students who learn science through local, place-based contexts retain it better and engage more deeply. For Florida educators, this is a massive advantage; you have world-class field sites outside your door. What does "local first" look like in your curriculum? #PlaceBasedEd

The pH of the ocean has dropped by 0.1 units since the industrial revolution. That sounds small. It isn't. 🧪Here’s why a 0.1 drop matters, and how to connect it to what's happening to shellfish and coral. #OceanAcidification #MarineScienceEducation #ClassroomScience #ChemistryDemo #FMSEA #OceanEd

Estuaries: where freshwater meets salt and many Florida marine species spend part of their lives. 🌿 For scientists, estuaries are ideal: nearby, measurable, and visibly seasonal. But they're threatened by development, nutrient runoff, and sea level rise. #Estuary #FloridaEcosystems #MarineScience

Seagrass, mangroves, and saltmarshes store more carbon per acre than terrestrial forests; and we're still losing them. The term "blue carbon" barely appears in curriculum. That's a gap marine educators are uniquely positioned to close. How are you teaching this concept? #BlueCarbon #oceanliteracy
