My wife wanted a deck built around the pool. I have a Masters in Divinity which is not helpful in deck building except it helps me pray more and curse less! And while I don't believe in purgatory, if there is such a place, I think pouring 34 bags of concrete for pillars should count as time served!

Building a 10 wt fly rod which will be heading to the UK. He wanted some American branding on it. So here's to the Red White and Blue! First coat of epoxy dried! Took top sections off the turner to build-up the butt section to get the epoxy level with the flag before a final coat over everything.

This is what's left of an 8oz sirloin I couldn't finish after eating a baked potato, a roll, and 3 grilled shrimp. When I was 16, I ate a baked potato, a salad, shrimp cocktail, a roll, and 71 ounces of a 72 oz steak at the Big Texan. (I threw up on the last bite.) I'm old.

Had the privilege of restoring a classic 1955 Winston bamboo rod. The owner picked thread choices and reel seat. I custom made a grip incorporating some maple and Ambrosia Burl wood. The Agate stripping guide was the final touch. Just needs epoxy.

Just had the absolute craziest thing happen. I'm wrapping the tip section on this vintage bamboo rod. The owner had already replaced the tip top. But, it wasn't in alignment with a flat surface on the bamboo blank. See first pic. He sanded down the tip and used JB WELD on it 1/

I got no bounce. I was doing yardwork at the campus ministry building. Decided to test my hops I had a standing vertical of 33" in highschool. Now, at 56, it's probably 23! New goal: touch the rim in 3 months!

Fly rod build about to go down! The shortest fly rod I own is a 7'9" Winston LT 3 wt 5 piece I built years ago. I love it. Silky smooth. But there are times I wished I had a smaller rod and a less expensive rod! So I picked up this little 6 ft 2 wt 4 piece fiberglass that will share a rod case.

The very first fly rod I built was in 1991. I was a poor college student. I wanted a nice rod but couldn't afford one. I asked my folks for a G Loomis IMX 8ft 4wt blank for Xmas and bought a book. The latest rod I built is an 8'6" 4 wt also by Gary Loomis. Graphite technology has come a long way.

Saturday I made a trip to a tiny creek. The area was devastated by a horrible fire followed by a massive flood in July. I was fearful all the wild Brookies had perished. As far as I know this is the southern- most pop of wild Brookies in the U.S. I was so happy to find a few had survived

Got the dry fit on the grip and reel seat insert for my buddies fly rod (long story on having to remove the 1st set.) Hope to have it glued up, add winding check, hook-keeper, labelled,and epoxied this weekend. The thread will darken to the crimson color to give us matching NMSU Aggie themed rods.

Building a fly rod for my old college roommate and a matching one for me! Got the guides wrapped tonight and think I've got as close a thread match as possible-the color will change after epoxy to the thread color under the decorative wrap. Now I need to add the black and silver on the guide wraps.

I love catching big trout. But small trout have a special place in my heart because they're often found in special places. These all came from really tiny creeks that required either a 4-6 mile hike to get to or a really steep canyon to get down. They don't have to be big to be beautiful. 🙂

Building a couple of NFC Gamma Alpha blanks-8'6" 4 weights. One for me. One for a good friend. We were roommates at New Mexico State University. So I'm gonna build matching rods using school colors. Trying to get a good color match is hard. The epoxy darkens them. Just ordered 2 more colors to try.

Hey #flyfishing friends. If you build rods or are interested in trying one, I have built 20+ rods from North Fork Composites. I've only been less than wowed with one model. You can expect good things from anything by Gary Loomis (yes, the name sake for G Loomis which is now Shimano owned.)

First coat of epoxy on the CTS MX 5wt rod rebuild. Did some dragon scale wraps at the butt section where I'll label the rod. I'm liking the Fuji prism thread. 2 Fuji titanium torzite guides -size 16 and 12 8 Recoil Snake guides sizes 5,4,3 Recoil tip top Gen 4 epoxy

I don't need more flies. I just like to tie. figured I'd experiment with some big Musky flies. This one is articulated with 4 sections on a size 4/0 hook. I added a clasp so I can substitute the tail for a trailing hook if needed (or both.) It weighs about 3/16th ounce dry. Took an hour to tie 😁

Last May I went fly fishing and golfing with my best friend. He broke my rod. I tried to live without it. I had 2 other 5 weights but this CTS MX is my fave. So I ordered a replacement section, stripped it completely down (except for the grip.) I rewrapped it last night. It still needs epoxy.

A fly by any other name is still... A fly. 😁 Basically an EP minnow tied on a size 2 hook trailed by 3 15mm shanks and one 20 mm shank wrapped with dubbing brush. And then there's that tail!
