Jeremy S Davis @flydrocarbon.bsky.social · 12/05/2026That's fair. I generally say it "knows" things in the sense it can regurgitate the knowledge, but it doesn't understand the things it says. It consistently gets confused or lies to me about stats and population genetics if I make the problem edge case enough 010
Jeremy S Davis @flydrocarbon.bsky.social · 12/05/2026This is how education in our society collapses. I tell my students there is a difference between knowledge and understanding. AI know things, but it generally doesn't understand them on a deep conceptual level. "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" this idea truly terrifies me 100
Jeremy S Davis @flydrocarbon.bsky.social · 07/05/2026And of course, huge thank you to Chi-Hua Lue, Matt Buffington, Amelia Lindsey and her entire lab for the legwork on the other parts of this that were beyond my expertise. I think we came together to make something really cool. 030
Jeremy S Davis @flydrocarbon.bsky.social · 07/05/2026On a personal note, I never thought I would be someone to help discover or name a new species of anything. Truly still in shock. Infinite thanks to Dan for taking me on the #Seabattical and trusting me to do some wacky field work. Check out Fig 1 for a note from my field journal about the find! 130
Jeremy S Davis @flydrocarbon.bsky.social · 07/05/2026This paper is really unique: it integrates a species description, field ecology notes, a genome assembly, and description of how a wolbachia endosymbiont induces parthenogenetic asexuality! 🤯 Give it a read, I promise it will be one of the weirder/cooler ones you have read in awhile! 160
Jeremy S Davis @flydrocarbon.bsky.social · 07/05/20267 years ago I was incredibly lucky to join @hoosierflyman.bsky.social on the great #Seabattical Today, you can read in full print @genetics-gsa.bsky.social the description of a NEW SPECIES of Drosophila parasitoid and it's really unique biology. I just happened to be the guy who found it! 🐝🏝️🪰 193

Jeremy S Davis @flydrocarbon.bsky.social · 07/07/2025I keep thinking about how I don't post/interact on here much anymore.
