Our language around housing is broken, because the incentives are broken. When homes get more expensive it's celebrated as 'recovery'. Otherwise it's 'sluggish'. No matter what politicians say, homes will never be affordable unless land becomes a worse investment.

Property taxes are a disincentive to build. Let's replace it with LVT. "As Missouri and its cities look to encourage population growth and development, adopting a land value tax is a simple and straightforward way to do so."

The best wealth tax is a tax on land wealth. It can't move and unlike other types of wealth, it impacts cost of living. "A land value tax of just 0.2% would raise the same $20B the wealth tax promises. A 0.86% rate would fund California's entire $87B health and human services budget."
San Francisco Chronicle opinion argues taxing billionaire-owned land is more effective than a wealth tax.

Land value tax is an idea that goes back to the beginnings of capitalism. It's superior to taxing work and productivity in all ways.

Imagine if our tax system didn't take from work, but rewarded it instead. BC could eliminate anti-productive taxes on property/income with land value tax. Instead of taxing what we do earn, we should tax what we don't earn from holding land.

There are many ways people are debating on how to tax AI to fund UBI, like 'token taxes'. Another, arguably simpler, way is to put company stock in a sovereign wealth fund that pays dividends.

To make number go down, number must go down Somehow, this simple truth has been lost in the public discourse. So many politicians say they want affordability, without saying how to bring down prices. But definition that's not possible.

The case for Land Value Tax is simple: replace anti-productive taxes on income and effort with a smarter system. Stop taxing what we want more of (work and building) and start taxing what we can't make more of (land).

Did you know the 1st UBI proposal was born out of a struggle for land rights in the 1770s? As Dorothy Woodend writes in The Tyee, the concept is "extremely old," rooted in the idea that the leadership class "fenced people out" from the resources they needed to survive.
