When the Stranger says: "what is the meaning of this city? Do you huddle close together because you love each other?" How will you answer? "We all dwell together to make money from each other"? Or "This is a community"?

It is worse in Texas. There's also Florida. And every red state is going to do the same (it's a concerted effort). Then the blue states have the enrollment cliff and face financial coercion from the federal government. It will be very bad for a very long time.

The Faculty Senate at Texas Tech did an unscientific survey of instructors on questions of course censorship and a significant number participated (c350). The results are both shocking but not surprising. www.texastribune.org/2026/05/29/t...

Texas Tech’s restrictions on race, gender lessons prompt changes
A faculty senate survey found professors altered or were asked to change material in 277 courses after Texas Tech’s restrictions on race, sexuality and gender.

"When the state decides which questions may and may not be researched, it is doing more than shaping curriculum. It is regulating the boundaries of knowledge itself by determining what future scholars may study and what universities are permitted to discover." #ttu #censorship

Texas Tech’s new limits on how faculty teach gender identity and sexual orientation challenge more than free speech
A new memo blocks graduate students from writing theses or dissertations on certain topics, raising questions about academic freedom and the purpose of higher education.

One more comment about this. You thought A&M was bad for censoring Plato's Symposium? Well, Texas Tech said "hold my beer" and banned Plato's REPUBLIC from a philosophy class because there's a brief mention of homosexual love in it.

But in seriousness, we study how information environments impact individual and group knowledge, we discuss responsibilities for being a participant in a knowledge community, and we explore the rationality and role of conspiracy theories. It's super fun!

But perhaps the most radical part is the revisions to the syllabus process that allows upper admin to pick and choose what they would like to censor at whim. Today gender and sexuality. Tomorrow climate change? Gut health? International relations? Anything deemed politically "controversial"

The article doesn't even begin to capture how oppressive this memo is. Yes, we cannot mention gender or sexual orientation in lower division classes, and we can only mention but not focus on it in upper division and graduate courses. And no graduate student admitted after Friday may study it...

There is a performative excellence in retracting students discussing how this memo affects them. No one is heard, least of all the students. Couldn't those omissions have been remedied? But instead student voices are erased.

10 weeks into a sixteen week semester and no word from the board of regents. I am being told to delay content. But keep teaching. It would be funny if it weren't so distressing. My students deserve better.

This is such an important point! I have a bunch to say about it, but I'll just register that I find the push to use llms in education to be a non starter because of this. (Or rather students should be trained to know the limitations so they can use them with care, tho I'd happily burn them all)

One reason is state demographics. California, for example, is expected to feel the enrollment cliff keenly (and are being prevented from making up the difference with international students). If we weren't destroying our universities nationally, though, this would be a great opportunity

It's important to note the scale of these searches, thousands of courses. At TTU we haven't seen the process yet, but it includes all course materials. That could be thousands of pages for a single course. They want to do it in one month. They need speed. Accuracy optional.
