...depending on the state transitions that occur between vegetation types. Ominous. At Lake Ohrid Albania, °C had already been at normal level for 1000 years when tree pollen caught up and forest had returned. 1000 years for full "state transition" from steppe to forest! Thats how slow 🌱🐝🐭🐦🐺migrate.

Happy to share the first article published in "Catena" by my post-doc Laura Gedminienė about the climatic trends in the South Baltics during the end- Pleistocene and Holocene. [free access for 50 days] kwnsfk27.r.eu-west-1.awstrack.me/L0/https:%2F... 🧪 #Paleobio ⚒️ #Geology #Climate

Hi Bluesky! 👋 I'm a researcher interested in plants, people and climate changes in the past, present and future - with a particular focus on Araucaria forests in Brazil and elsewhere. I also run the 3D Pollen Project (3dpollenproject.wixsite.com/main) because pollen is cooler than you think!
Oliver Wilson (white man with black and grey stubble, in a blue shirt and beige cap) smiling in front of a large Brazilian Araucaria tree on a sunny day.A line of candelabra-shaped Araucaria trees in a field of erva mate in southern Brazil, under a cloudless blue sky.Four men (two white, two Indigenous) stand and talk in a school building in Brazil. One of the white men (Oliver Wilson) is holding a blue model pollen grain and talking about it to the others. In the foreground, a blue plastic model of a pollen grain is being held in a hand. In the background, trees and an information board showing a multicoloured collage of microscope images of the pollen grain. The pollen grain has deep and intricate network patterning, and a couple of large holes in its outer wall.

Having some #AGU2024 FoMo this year but can’t leave the family again. At least our (Drs Ellie Goud Pete Whittington Peter Beckett @florinp.bsky.social & @nbasiliko.bsky.social) research on restoring critical #peatland functions in heavily metal polluted landscapes is still there youtu.be/-smiKnf-WU8

Palynology is where a core is taken of a bog. Pollen is laid down annually on the bog & survives protected in the moss as it grows. The core is sampled at intervals & inspected under a microscope & data extrapolated, carbon dated & read & vegetation identified

Interested in ponds and greenhouse gas emissions? I'll shortly be advertising a PhD at University of Liverpool with the title: "How do fish affect greenhouse gas emissions from small waterbodies?"
