I believe that this is the very first time we've heard from Larry Summers since his Epstein files retirement. Is he coming back?

Delighted to see Lisa Kahn and Isaac Sorkin taking over as co-directors of the NBER Labor Studies Program. Two outstanding economists and thoughtful leaders. Congratulations to both, and especially to Lisa, who has been a wonderful friend and colleague for many years.

I apologize to my co-authors, but it's a little difficult for me right now to focus on doing my part of the paper revisions.

I emailed Paul Klemperer to see if I could share the link to the Jim Mirrlees auction more widely and he agreed. As Bulow & Klemperer (AER 1996) show, having an additional bidder is more important than the specifics of the auction.

Nuffield College is selling signed books from Nobel Laureate Sir James Mirrlees's personal collection. True to form, the sales mechanism is a sophisticated auction based on Paul Klemperer's product-mix auction. mirrlees-auction.nuff.ox.ac.uk

The 2026 World Cup has shattered one of soccer's favorite myths. The biggest draws aren't England, France, Germany, Spain or the young stars. They're Mexico, the USA, Argentina, Brazil, and Messi (39) & Ronaldo (41). GOATs, immigration, and geography matter much more than FIFA rankings.

Steve Salop, Allan Collard-Wexler, Marty Gaynor, Nancy Rose, Larry White, and I joined an amicus brief supporting reversal in FTC v. Meta. The district court's market-definition analysis departs from basic economics and risks weakening Section 2 enforcement in digital markets.

Nobody is better at restoring the public's trust in universities than a NY Times columnist lecturing students on "how to fall in love with someone" ... ... or "how to divorce your wife of 27 years for your much younger research assistant"? We are not serious institutions.

George Serafeim didn't disclose that he was collaborating with green investors while publishing (now discredited) research on the returns to such investments. HBS did nothing and even promoted his research. At the same time Ben Edelman disclosed his COIs and HBS still fired him.

Remember Ran Duan, the restaurant owner overcharging customers? Turns out he's a media-savvy celebrity with luxury watches, a jet-set insta, diamond-draped models, shady business practices, drugs, a young woman's fatal overdose in his home, and a stunning failure to act.

Large-scale online deanonymization with LLMs shows how easily pseudonymous users can now be re-identified from unstructured text alone. When discussing our EJMR paper at NBER SI 2023 Catherine Tucker argued that rising compute would soon erode online anonymity. The future may already be here.

One of my favorite things in the Olympics is looking at the slowest racers in the alpine technical events (Giant Slalom & Slalom) and then wondering whether I could beat them. I am very confident I could beat the Indian guy in the slalom. Not 100% sure about the Eritrean in the Giant Slalom.

Very sad to hear of the passing of John Kagel. He was a foundational figure in behavioral and experimental economics and his research reshaped how economists think about strategic interaction and social preferences. His teaching and mentorship influenced generations of students.

1) Gino committed repeated research fraud (138 papers!). 2) Several influential and wealthy people (Lessig, Ackman, P&Q) continue to support her. 3) Harvard changed its review procedures. 4) Gino will likely get a settlement because of 3) ... which has nothing to do with 1).

Over on Twitter/X, Bill Ackman (of Harvard/Claudine Gay/plagiarism/tennis debacle fame) has written another 3,000+ word post. He believes that Francesca Gino's RAs faked her data. And, plot twist, he's been funding Gino's legal battle against Harvard since 2024. x.com/i/status/200...

The brilliant Kate Ho has passed away. She was an amazing economist and a genuinely kind human being. Her work shaped how we think about healthcare markets and her generosity touched everyone lucky enough to know her. The profession and the world are poorer without her.

In Sweden, corporate acquisitions lead to persistent earnings losses for workers. Wages fall, some workers are displaced, and the gains largely go to acquiring CEOs and shareholders. Employment and revenue stay flat. Profit rises because value is extracted from workers.

Hades II is amazing. There are nods to both Lattimore's and Wilson's Odyssey translations. Lattimore: “Tell me, Muse, of the man of many ways…” Wilson: “Tell me about a complicated man…” Hades II: “Some know him as the man of many ways; certainly he is a complicated one.”

In 1983, households aged 75+ were 5% richer than the average. In 2022, they were 55% richer. Meanwhile, under-35 households went from 21% of average wealth to just 16%. America’s wealth is aging way faster than its population. www.nber.org/digest/20251...

Firms began taking longer to complete trials and waited to start new ones, especially when competitors’ results were about to be released. They also reduced the number of trial sites by about half, becoming more cautious as other firms' data became public.

Transparency helps innovation ... until it doesn't. My new paper with Cunningham, Hodgson, and Wang (on the JM!) studies the 2017 FDA Final Rule, which required drug firms to publicly disclose all clinical trial results. Disclosure increased, but innovation slowed. cowles.yale.edu/sites/defaul...

Richly deserved prize for Aghion ... ... but I am equally interested in the paintings and the designer chair in the background. Top and bottom left look like late Cubist (Bracque, Gris, Picasso). Far right looks like a Miro. No idea about the chair.
