Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is a way to communicate without talking, like using a letter board or typing on an iPad. We want AAC available for anyone who needs it, and for all autistic people to be supported to communicate in the way that works best for us.
Watercolor blue background, blue text reads: “October is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Acceptance Month.” There’s a graphic of an orange AAC device that says “Communication is a human right!” The ASAN logo is below.

Racker is a non-profit that supports people with disabilities, founded in 1948. They have supported my family and many others through a rich and vast variety of supports, services and resources. They have made a strong, positive and invaluable impact on the community as a whole.

Today is the 52rd Anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act! Take some time to learn about this important milestone in disability history!
Dark blue textured background. Text reads: Today is the 53rd Anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Take some time today to learn about this act and why it is important to our community! The ASAN logo is at the bottom. Dark blue textured background. Text reads: What is the Rehabilitation Act of 1973? The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was the first federal disability rights law. This law is also known as the Rehab Act. The purpose of the Rehab Act was to stop discrimination against disabled people by the federal government or any organizations using federal funding.
What is Section 504? Section 504 was part of the Rehab Act. It was the first federal civil rights law passed to protect people with disabilities. It said that programs that receive federal funding cannot discriminate against disabled people.
Dark blue textured background. Text reads: For many years, the government delayed implementing section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. In 1977, disabled activists, along with other community organizations like the Black Panthers, occupied the San Francisco Health, Education, and Welfare federal building for 28 days, winning their demand for the enforcement of section 504.
Like the disabled activists who fought for 504, ASAN will continue to work to protect and expand disability rights!

Teach Yourself How To Learn and Teach Students How To Learn are two influential and impactful books to understand learning and obtain valuable ideas of how to craft a course, or how to learn any topic in a more efficient way. (1/4) @routledgebooks.bsky.social

Lauren Hough Williams, who leads the Program for Inclusion and Neurodiversity Education is someone I admire. She is unique--warm and supportive yet a fierce advocate for neurodivergent students, K-12 and beyond. #Neurodiversity #Inclusion #Belonging #Education
Students are seen engaged, working on a problem in groups of four, inside a classroom.

The most cherished endorsement for my book was written by Jasmine Mueller, a student at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. Normally, endorsers are professionals and experts. But the book is for college students (and others taking university-level courses), so I wanted a student to review it.

There was a similar article recently, this one goes much more in depth. It really resonates with me and explains very well my way of thinking, including (see next comment) Should School Be More Like the Gym? www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

Should the Classroom Be More Like the Gym?
As A.I. presses harder on the academic enterprise, we might look to a place where process is its own reward.

Calling all neurodivergent people: what papers, essays, etc. would you say are fundamental for someone who is familiar with the medical model who wants to understand the social model (or similar). I’m looking for readings for someone that needs to see the light and doesn’t have much time.

Autism, ADHD, dyscalculia, dyslexia, mental health conditions, etc. are integral part of humanity. Humans as a species are neurodiverse, the same way our bodies also come in a variety package.

First I need to say that I don't know much about GenAI capabilities. I have used it for very basic stuff, mostly to get a sense of what could help students. There are two ways I could have benefited from GenAI but didn't because it doesn't have that capability yet. 1/7

As we get ready to start a new academic year, it is worth considering how we support students. How are you empowering them to believe in themselves and strive to do their best without burning out?
Image shows the inside of a library, with a large table in the middle and sofas where students are sitting and studying. Some of them are sitting facing large windows.
