I've had this green possum yarn in my stash for nearly twenty years, and have started many projects with it, but never quite finished anything... This time round, I'm trying a brioche jumper. So, what do we think, is this one gonna stick? Place your bets! 🧶 #knitting #briocheknitting #wip #yarn

So the bad news is that I lost one of my brand new earrings somewhere. However, you can cheer yourself up by looking at this beautiful crochet hook, which was created in a collaboration with the local bugs! 🧶 Now available in my folksy shop! #crochet #yarncrafts #whittling

What have I been up to, you ask? Well, I've been drawing mythological creatures from Germany for my zine. #illustration #cryptids #folktales #mythology #germany
Digital illustration of a Bahkauv. This looks like a calf with very large eyes, shaggy fur, bear paws and a long scaly tail that drag on the ground. The Bahkauv is said to jump on the backs of drunk men on their way home from the pub, just to mess with them and make it harder for them to get home. Once they get to their house, it jumps off and goes looking for its next victim. Digital illustration of a Dilldap, which is a mythological creature said to look like a mix of a polecat, rabbit and deer. They're shy creatures, which survive mostly on stolen potatoes, which they grate with their tongue. They live for over a hundred years and lay eggs.Digital illustration of an Elwetritsch, which is a mix of a chicken, a duck, a goose and various fae folk. They have useless little wings and an overly long beak. Elwetritsche are a variation of a type of demon that sneaks into people's bedrooms at night to sit on their chests and give them nightmares and sleep paralysis.Digital illustration of a Wolpertinger and a Rasselbock. Both of these are related to the Dilldap, and also to Jackalopes, and both of them are often depicted as hares with deer antlers, but Wolpertinger also sometimes take the shape of squirrels with duck beaks.

🧶 The stick of beechwood I brought back from Germany was just big enough for one more. Oooft, that colour.. 😍 #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

🧶 The great thing about carving crochet hooks as a hobby is that materials are very easy to come by - almost any old stick will do! I found this piece of willow on the way to the library. #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

🧶 I only learned recently that 'spalted' wood is simply wood that's started rotting already, so it gets some interesting patterns from bacteria starting to break it down. This crochet hook was unwittingly made from spalted birch. #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

🧶 Last autumn we had to cut down an old apple tree in my granddad's garden, so of course I took the opportunity to take some wood for crochet hooks. It developed a tiny crack at the bottom, but that just adds character, surely. 😅 #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

I mostly use windfall woods, which has led to an obsession with picking up sticks when I'm out. This piece of beech wood came back from Germany with me on my last trip, and it made the cutest most beautiful little hook! #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

🧶 Another larch crochet hook for today. The internet will tell you that the most popular crochet hook size is 5mm, but the ones I've sold were mostly in the 3-4mm range, so I've been trying to make a few more in those sizes. This one is about 3.75mm. #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

🧶 Elm is also a nice wood for some lovely grain patterns. I used to have an elm in the garden, which sadly succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease, but it left behind a number of badly placed and apparently unkillable offspring, which provide the material 😅 #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

🧶 The very first crochet hook I ever carved, oh, back in the summer of 2019, was this little number from an oak branch I found while hiking. It's aged beautifully and I'll never get tired of looking at the pretty, pretty end grain pattern. #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

🧶 By far the weirdest wood I've ever worked with is fuchsia. It's unbelievably wet (= impossible to sand) when green, and unbelievably hard (= impossible to carve) when dry, and has the most unfortunate way of shrivelling and twisting as it dries out. It could be perfect for smaller hooks, if... 1/2

🧶 The other good thing about cherry wood is that it will stay stable even at a smaller size - not all types of wood will. The smallest size crochet hook I've made is 2mm. Not quite small enough for the teeniest tiniest of laces, but hey... #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

🧶Most commonly I use cherry wood for my crochet hooks, because it's easiest to find around here. It's also got some really nice colours. #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

🧶 For wood, I use anything I can get my filthy paws on, really. This crochet hook was made from a rosemary bush in my garden, that I had to cut back because it was blocking a path. (That was also when I learned about the existence of rosemary beetles.) #crochet #yarncrafts #woodcarving #whittling

Did you know that the labels hardwood and softwood say nothing about how hard or soft a wood is? It's just about whether a tree has leaves (hard) or needles (soft). This #crochet hook is made from larch, which is one of the hardest woods we have, despite being classed as a softwood.

Have I mentioned I also make #crochet hooks? Let's have a look! Sometimes in the summer I get to spend a few days at my grandparents' cottage all by myself, which is blissfully boring, and usually ends with me finding some new wood to try out. This one's lilac, which turned out to be super-smooth.
