That’s the conventional view, yes. It supports the ‘We British don’t do fascism and Mosley was never any real danger’ narrative. There is evidence that Mosley was on the up in 1939. www.jstor.org/stable/260327

Good news on GDP from the ONS this morning. Bad news that we still have to look on X to see it.

Though I still reckon there is a bit of room for manoeuvre here. If you cut employee NI and raised income tax by the same amount, most employees wouldn’t pay any more. When I tried it on the @theifs.bsky.social gizmo, I shifted 5p and got £15bn extra.

Sunset across @warrenfarmnr.bsky.social and @brentriverpark.bsky.social. Boat moored up on the Grand Union full of people speaking Spanish and playing Euro-techno. We could almost be on holiday.

I still like this @mattwhittaker.bsky.social chart showing how deep the recessions were and how long it took us to recover.

This is bang on. I have little confidence our new PM will break the pattern.

Some good news on the economy, though every month I find myself wondering why the hell the government is still on X.

So AI may cause massive transformational disruption in organisations (and in the wider society) while still not delivering the leap in aggregate productivity we have been hoping for.

Another paper by Marleen on how Gen AI is eroding the social fabric of organisations. If you've seen The Odyssey recently, you'll probably find the idea of 'GenAI Sirens' scarily amusing. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

I’d recommend reading the whole paper. It’s not long and it’s not full of academic gobbledygook. But for those short of time, 3 things:

It may not even break down silos. It creates different silos instead. Rather than people communicating across silos, they are communicating with AI and not talking to their colleagues.

It’s not due to AI, or to reallocation of labour from low productivity sectors. The recovery is broad based. No evidence that it’s down to AI either. “It’s hard to tell what is causing faster productivity growth – but that is a good problem to have.”

There is a tendency within conservatism to be more afraid of a government a little bit more left-wing than usual than they are of fascism. Fascists have never taken power anywhere without the collusion of at least some mainstream conservatives.

This is misleading too. He means we haven’t achieved that turn-of the century productivity growth since. But that was a bit of a blip even then.

The establishment is not some woke ‘lanyard class’. The real establishment is rarely criticised because it can shut criticism down. It is immensely rich and powerful and you only realise it’s there when you challenge it. And Farage is right in the middle of it.

Rutland is being incorporated into what's left of Leicestershire again. I can't see that going down well either. Perhaps we should ask one of Rutland's foremost Marxist economists for comment. @chrisdillow.bsky.social www.rutland.gov.uk/sites/defaul...
