If you have to run past rightful condemnation of war crimes or even ethnic cleansing to instead claim the willful attempt to murder a whole people, and you do so in a conflict in which the number of deaths -- including combatants -- is exceeded by births, then yeah, you've gone there.

As puck drop approaches for the 2026-27 Toronto Maple Leafs, let us hope this year's team can aspire to be as good as the one in The Love Guru was.

It's both sad and important that something of this length needs to be written about the litany of disingenuous arguments ("it's a theatre!" "War criminal!" "$180 fee!") written to justify people shouting "you're going to hell!" at Jews going to worship on the holiest day of the year.

The closest the #leafs have come to winning the Stanley Cup since 1967, was in Mike Myers' hugely disappointing THE LOVE GURU. But hope springs eternal so as a new season dawns, Reviving Reel Toronto looks back on how the movie used the city's locations. davidfleischer.substack.com/p/where-the-...

I was offline for the holiday and heard about Belleville late. Avi has spent 3 years denying these incidents and calling Canadian Jews narcissists. Now as damage control, he produces a mealy mouthed statement about everyone's right to pray in peace. Etc. The NDP can do better. Or they should.

This would be a terrible statement if it hadn't come simultaneous with a synagogue being shot, from a man who has literally failed to call out a single Canadian antisemitic incident in 3 years. Shameful, narcissistic Co-opting of a Jewish holiday to accuse other Jews of collective guilt. Nasty stuff

This year, I walked my son to his friends in person through the crowds and we received no comments besides for someone musing out loud whether I'm a rabbi. That was when it was both of us.

To the best of my knowledge, there is only one time in human history where the King of Kensington, Marty McFly and Han Solo (radio cast version) appeared on screen together. This is it.

I'll say it aloud. I want Canada to win this trade war. I want them to kick the living shit out of us. I want them to do it fast, imposing pain on American economic sectors, making clear the costs of misrule to our voting citizens. Things will have to get worse before we make them better.

I hadn't rewatched any of last year's World Series at all until today's #BlueJays Way episode. It brought back the same pit-of-stomach feelings that I get it if 13 Seconds or any clips from the Bills 4 Super Bowls come up. I know. It's just sports but some wounds never heal.

I've definitely mentioned before how Toronto food reddit lost its mind over an innocent shakshuka review a few months ago and the New York article exemplifies the same, problematic discourse. . This sort of tribalism doesn't help anyone.

TFW a. guy shows up in your replies, asks a series of "gotcha" questions, doesn't get the responses he wants, is asked if he'd like to agree to disagree (even though he hasn't said anything to disagree about) and then he just blocks and disappears into the ether.

Every reply to this on the other place is those who don't know basic terminology losing their minds, echoing the self-owning conflation of Zionism and Judaism (which usually offends them greatly). Some stuff is beyond parody. "How dare this hospital assert that the Jewish people continue to live!"

When I was saying kaddish the year after my dad passed, I'd occasionally leave my teffiliin in the car and one day someone broke in and stole them (and other stuff) Huge hassle to replace but I assume they were confused/disappointed when they opened the fancy velvet bag and found these weird boxes.

Another good indication things are not going great? The Toronto reddit sub has to lock itself down every single time there's a news story about an antisemitic attack. And it ain't because of all the people who are upset about it.

At Stratford to see Waiting for Godot, with Paul Gross. Saw Don McKellar in the crowd and ran into Mark McKinney on the street. It's all making me annoyed I'm missing the cast reading of the Slings & Arrows prequel here tomorrow night.

Famously, this movie opened the same weekend as When Harry Met Sally amid the same summer that saw Batman, Lethal Weapon 2,Ghostbusters II and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (among others). Few saw it in the theatre but I did, dammit.

A few years ago, I was going to a #Bluejays game and heard on the radio that Duane Ward was signing autographs if you donated to some charity. I grabbed an old card and found him sitting at some table in a corner. It's just always a privilege to meet these childhood heroes.

"expands" it by establishing the criteria for Jews to be socially acceptable to him and then explaining that no Zionist intellectuals exist on the same level as proud, Jewish geniuses like Norman Finkelstein and Glenn Greenwald. Tough look for Al Einstein. Just explicit Good Jew/Bad Jew stuff.

Great essay and almost exactly my experience. I knew Bragg a bit and Wilco by reputation but got this as one of my 12 free CDs from the BMG Music Club. I was completely sold by the time the band joined in with the drums. Never looked back on the album or on Wilco, who I should have found earlier.

Damn, Ken Jennings with some harsh hot takes on how terrible #BlueJays fans are. I can't decide if western Canadians are giving Toronto a bad name or if the Mariners being older than the Jays and not having a single championship to show for it is the real subtext here.

This is my biggest, random "celebrity" interaction since I somehow ended up with filmmaker Boots Riley (apparently, surprisingly unaware of the concept of connotation) explaining to me that "globalize the intifada" cannot possibly be violent because the word just innocuously means "uprising."
