Good to see the picture (bald man pointing at CRT screen) that launched a thousand digital effects publicity poses. I feel compelled to post this classic meta image, a witty satire of wheels within wheels, that graced the pages of Cinefex 77.
Master cartoonist and visual effects supervisor John Van Vliet (L) and digital artist William Arance make an amusing gesture during the making of "My Favorite Martian" (1999). Picture specially posed and then printed, with tongue in cheek, in Cinefex 77.

Amen to that. I had the privilege of climbing inside the film and interviewing many of the filmmakers for Cinefex magazine, back in the day. A few years later, I penned a purple-prose review of the film for my blog, archived at the ugly URL below: img1.wsimg.com/blobby/go/e3...

Yeah, it's a really cool show; but it's based on the work of Swedish graphic artist Simon Stålenhag, not Spielberg or Azimov. Showrunner Nathaniel Halpern adapted his own intriguing mythology from brief narrative descriptions that Stålenhag had for his evocative sci-fi art pieces. simonstalenhag.se

Choosing only four is the hardest part. 1) Hulot: my favorite summer movie, Dad took my Mum to see this when they were courting. 2) Blimp: what it is to be British. 3) Doinel: Truffaut's heartbreaking cinematic life story. 4) Bowie: loving the alien. Pick yours here: thecriterioncloset.com#closet
Criterion covers for a Jacques Tati classic, a Powell & Pressburger masterpiece, a fantastic Antoine Doinel collection, and Nic Roeg's trippy film of The Man Who Fell To Earth.

Design a tattoo: turn bad scar into good. I have a couple of dog scars. My parents' dog chomped my upper lip when I was trying to retreive a popsicle stick. Another from my dog, Flash, who motorbiked his legs when I tickled his tummy and left a happy scar on my forearm. I'll drink to your leg.

When my Dad died, he left his pride and joy open-air backyard swimming pool open to the UK elements. For a few years it sat stagnant, no chlorination or cleaning, and it went from crystal-clear shimmering sapphire blue to a black pit. Who knows what lurked within. I'm guessing that'll happen here.

The flags that waved behind the tall chain-link fences of Butlin’s Holiday Camp in Clacton beckoned me as a lad while visiting my grandparents in the 1970s. But never did I venture into their perimeter. Brrrr.
