Stretching the meaning of the words 'summer cabin'.
Standing on the edge of a wooden deck. In front, a grassy, green patch. Further away, a foamy sea descending on a small beach. A snow-capped mountain disappears into thick, white clouds. Everything looks fabulously foggy, wet, and cold.

We are also having a referendum about whether or not to start talks about EU membership today and the polls are closing right now, but I don't have anything interesting to say about that.

So 29 August was important because the weather was said to turn on that day. How it turned would predict the weather for the next three weeks. It was a crucial time. So Icelanders waited nervously for the day to pass, wondering if it would mean survival or disaster.

This time of year was all about preparing for the winter and preserving as much food as you could before the North Atlantic winter came knocking.

Today is Head Day (Höfuðdagur) in Iceland, named after the beheading of John the Baptist, but that's not why this day is important. It's because Head Day used to be THE weather day in Icelandic folklore. 🧵

My daughter just got this paper embroidery thing and now my son is outraged that I haven't been able to find Marvel version. "How can there be no Marvel embroidery, mum? How?"

It's so good, though. Horribly, beautifully good, and still relevant for the madness that's happening to children in so many places today.

The road goes ever on and on and sometimes it disappears for a bit.
A rubble of dusty, brown rocks seems to magically turn into a vaguely roadlike path, also dusty brown. The sky is blue.

Traditionally, activities might include a pillow fight above the water in the harbour, a tug of war, a fisherman's ball, a fisherman's mass and/or a remembrance ceremony, though this all varies from town to town. But the pillow fight is the best one because someone will fall into the freezing water.
Two women in swimsuits on a log suspended over the sea in the harbour. One woman is still sitting, the other one is already falling into the water. The pier is full of people looking on.

Ships coming into harbour and getting their crown of flags tells you that Fishermen's Day is soon upon us. By law, all ships must be berthed before midnight on Saturday, and they are not allowed to sail again until after 12 on Monday.
Looking down a street that ends in a view of a large, blue trawler. Look closely and you'll see a line of flags leading from the bow, up into the mast and back towards the stern.

It is 7°C, nothing is green yet, there's a bit of snow in the mountains and it'll probably rain for the next 40 days. But the summer cabin is habitable again and it's still bright out at 23:00 so I don't care, I'm declaring summer.
A glass of beer on a wooden deck. Behind it is a mountain, an ocean and in the distance, islands. There is much brown and very little green.

The big news on this fine voting day in Iceland. Let's all hope that people will start behaving themselves as the night wears on.
Screenshot from the Icelandic news, automatically translated into English:

The police in the capital area were called out today regarding a person eating an apple on a bus.

A police statement said that according to the bus driver, passengers are absolutely not allowed to eat apples on the bus. The case was handled by the police.

The police also received a report of a doorbell ringing in District 109. The individual was spoken to and told to stop bothering people.

Police also note that no reports have been received regarding polling stations in the capital area today.

Soon after the lambs are up and walking, they'll go outside with their mothers, and not long after that, the sheep will be herded up into the mountains where they'll roam until the end of summer.

My Helsinki hotel’s unsubstantiated claim about Finnland having the best drinking water in the world is quite offensive to my cultural identity, which is entirely based on ICELAND having the best drinking water in the world, actually.

An old record sleeve with a photo of four men dressed in matching Adidas tracksuits for obscure reasons. Three of them are holding long logs/branches that are much taller than them, also for obscure reasons. And why are there not four logs/branches, as many as the men?

My brother used to eat little corners off book pages. In the small library of the small town we lived in, I'd sometimes get a book with a few missing top corners, and I'd know he'd read it at some point. I wonder if any of them are still there and if people have puzzled over this.
