great time of year for swimming in brockwell lido
Sunlit outdoor lido with turquoise water, lane ropes and one swimmer, brick buildings and autumn trees beyond.

woke up on the sleeper at st austell, and reading susan cooper’s Over Sea Under Stone earlier was reminded St Austell is where the children travel to on the train, before heading to their adventure. st ives is nice! the barbara hepworth sculpture garden is really something else. magical.

no, it’s definitely still weirdly sweaty. i did a coast walk in the wind and rain today and it was *still* muggy. i was bedraggled and clammy as a dog.

then barbara hepworth’s studio and garden which is one of the best gallery/art experiences i’ve had in a long time, every pace a change of perspective. highly recommended. and then an amazing swim in the sea. and it’s only lunchtime!
lush garden with bronze sculptures dotted about, roofs, sea and blue sky in the background. large bronze sculpture made up of four slabs balanced on their end each with a large off-centre hole in. two slabs face each other on the ground the other two face each other balanced across the two below at right angles. some sort of palm tree to the left i don’t know what sort might not even be a palm. roofs, blue skies and clouds beyond the same four slab sculpture in the background, a sort of hollowed apple or orange shaped bronze sculpture, with sections taken out, revealing another form within it in the foreground. blue skies beyond.

omg @thefence.bsky.social has a piece on pink slime journalism feat. “Coach” Weinhaus, as introduced by @helldude.bsky.social on a remarkable, approaching art, episode of the ALAB podcast (Ep 8: The Counterclerk) now advising and lawyering for f’ing Yaxley-Lennon/Tommy Robinson
an article from The Fence magazine about pink slime journalism appearing in the UK. a small dashed off cartoon in black brushstrokes in the bottom left hand features a newspaper man with a clapboard in the old style selling something apparently called Clown News

i love imagining that bit - quite a long bit! - of time. the periodic seasonal expeditions, the lore around when and when not to go. the “just made it” moments, the sucking of teeth, the period where it started looking not viable. feel The Broomway is the best, closest still navigable example today.
Broomway bridlepath, stretches across mudflats and sandbanks from foreground to horizon, the top third of the picture taken up with blue sky and the occasional high cloud.

my morning laugh. “take 78. look amazed Harry!” “ok ok i got it this time”
an advert for madame tussaud’s has a waxwork of harry kane in full england kit being looked at by a frighteningly unrealistic actual harry kane with an expression of astonished wonder? or something on his face.

have you read mad travellers by ian hacking? he uses the 19thC european epidemic of fugue state wandering as a proxy to look at illnesses like ME. as he says early on “people ask whether it’s real, the question is a real *what*?” (i paraphrase).
text about seeking certainty at the ontological status of schizophrenia or other psychological states or disorders. ian hacking, mad travellers.

similarly i was curious about this murder weapon description in a (late - 1963) Agatha Christie. suggests people in Britain were accustomed to cooking with… not a “french bladed” knife. ie a flat blade, more like something these days described as Japanese? www.boroughkitchen.com/products/new...

A description of London coming out of the war in He Who Whispers. It focuses on the experiences of people rather than what’s presented publicly in the newspapers.

i find the dates here (1490-1520) fascinating. not because of the lag, but because of how fast it is. to take a (not particularly satisfactory) modern analogue, the BBC launched iPlayer in 2007, and even now studios and distributors are trying to unpick and rationalise their supply chain.
a photo of a page from a book describing the transition from manuscripts to printed books, and the initial similarity in appearance between the two. it also states that it required new forms of literature to really drive the uptake of new text founts.

this section in the chapter conscience and conscious is a good example. it is extremely lucid on how the mechanics of languages, concepts, actions and perception play upon each other, and the confusions that can arise.
witness, not as a gude. Under the name conscience we must also include that which is called synteresis, or the general repository of moral principles?
If popular language had followed these distinctions, much confusion, and perhaps not a little bloodshed, would have been avoided. But that is not the way of common language. It would have nothing to do with the word synteresis though it was ready to talk abundantly about the thing. It therefore used the single word conscience, sometimes to mean the consciring of what we have done, sometimes the Inner Lawgiver who tells us what we should or should not do, sometimes the inner nagger or prompter that urges us to obey the Lawgiver here and now, and sometimes other things as well. All the senses work upon, and in and out through, one another, and often, no doubt, men did not know themselves, much less make clear to others, exactly what they meant. There are, it is true,

bulgarian and georgian wines are v much my jam at the moment.
three bottles the one in front it’s a Melnik 55 with a rather ornate and verbose (tho not legible) label in cream and red with various ornamental motifs. behind on the right is a not entirely visible bottle apparently of fernet branca and on the right another bottle with a fragment of visible italian perhaps. to th left is some sort of pastoral art postcard all a bit bleary. composition sits against some white kitchen tiles and a rather horrible grey, black and white flecked formica kitchen surface top. it probably has a name i don’t know it.

one of the things i like about the annales school is their obsession with collecting data also meant they could be honest about when they just didn’t know. more narrative versions of history seem tojust pretend a lot of the time, or bridge or scumble the known and the guessed at (even when likely!)

so, time to do this. or at least it will be once i’ve finished declare by tim powers, who himself might be seen as a bit thomas pynchon-lite (positive). still pynchon has a way of making the synapses fire differently. ludic essentialism.
