What is happening in and around Antarctica should be such a wake-up call! The Earth is progressively losing its ability to reflect heat which the oceans keep absorbing. Payback time is looming large on the horison. Where are the emissions emergency brakes?! Data: ads.nipr.ac.jp/vishop/#/ext...

The Virgin and Child, c. 1630-40, by #MariaFaydherbe (Flemish, 1587-1643), who was baptized #otd, Sept 12. Held by the Victoria & Albert Museum, collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O126716... #artherstory #womenartists
The physical description on the museum’s object page for this carved alabaster statuette reads, “This small-scale sculpture depicts the standing Virgin supporting the Child, who is placed on an elaborately carved architectural pedestal adorned with a cherub and scrolled ornament. The Virgin holds the Child’s right hand in hers, while her left hand supports him, resting on his left thigh. He holds the orb in his left hand. Both figures step forward with their left feet, looking downwards, smiling, as if the group was intended to be placed above the viewer. The Virgin has abundant hair, coiled up in two plaited buns on each side of her head, and falling down to her shoulders. She wears a cloak knotted at the front, the folds draped over her right arm. The Child wears a simple robe. The back of the sculpture is relatively plain, almost flat, with just a few shadowy folds carved on the back of the Virgin’s dress, implying the group was to be set into a niche or against a wall. It has suffered minor surface damage; marks on the top of both heads suggest that metal haloes may once have been affixed to them. The figures are placed on an integral irregularly shaped rectangular plinth, beyond which the Virgin’s left foot overhangs. It is monogrammed on the reverse at the lower right, the ‘MF S.’ interpreted as an abbreviation for ‘Maria Faydherbe sculpsit.’”

#Hibiscus, from the Flowers of the Twelve Months: August, 1690-1710, by #YunBing (#Qingyu 清於; Haoru 浩如; Chinese, Qianlong era, active late C17th–early C18th). Held by the Asian Art Museum, searchcollection.asianart.org/objects/5438... #artherstory #womenartists #hernaturalhistory
A delicate rectangular, portrait-mode painting against a gold background of five pink hibiscus blossoms and leaves on stems that lean into the artwork from its right edge. There are two red stamps, one over the other, in the bottom left corner of the work. According to the museum's object page, “The hibiscus is called mufurong in Chinese and often used as a pun for ‘wealth’ (fu) and ‘glory’ (rong). Another name is ‘intoxicated hibiscus’ (zuijiu furong) because the pinkish white blossoms, which open early in the morning, turn crimson at night. One of nine flowers of autumn, the ancient name for the hibiscus was ‘resists frost’ (jushuang)."

A painting from the late C16th or early C17th, badly in need of restoration/conservation, depicting the head, shoulders, chest, arms and hands of a white woman with long blond hair. With her left hand she holds a closed red book at breast level; and she holds up a martyr's palm between the thumb and forefinger of her right hand. A dagger hilt emerges from the right side of her breast.
