it’s the feeling that you are one year too late to a process that’s two years from completion where every important decision was made before it started

chinese state capacity and construction expertise is really something else newsletter.semianalysis.com/p/the-chines...
Speed and cost: a different sport

The US buildout is power-gated with interconnection queues, transformer lead times, behind-the-meter workarounds, which we have covered at length here. China’s is chip-gated: generation is abundant, state-owned utilities treat datacenter load as a development win, permitting is a policy funnel rather than a bottleneck, and construction labor is plentiful. With no physical friction on the facility side, the build cycle is driven purely by internet platform demand.

On speed, the standard delivery time for a 100MW facility has compressed from ~18 months in the cloud era to ~12 months in the AI era, with state-of-the-art projects finishing faster still.

For reference, our US modular deep dive The Wild Wild West of LEGO Datacenters found the best-case full-modular buildout in the US still takes 12–18 months of construction, sitting behind 12–13 months of permitting that cannot overlap. For China, the permitting period before construction is typically 3–6 months, and faster in EDWC regions.

consider the case of keith wilson, who campaigned on high speed rail in his pdx mayoral campaign (????) but has basically never mentioned it since and is totally checked out from other transit and rail funding discussions

it is a weird issue politically where the high speed rail coalition is off in its own world, disconnected from any actual policy advocacy or expertise and nobody in the DOTs is interested in putting real effort into making the cascades better

we have 700-800/month micro studios here that are affordable on a minimum wage ($16.80) income. filtering + very small dwellings can absolutely make this doable specifically for one person households working full time at minimum wage — households with kids or other nonworkers are arguably harder

well he is right that the US has big open spaces without the population density to support HSR. but we have lots of densely populated corridors as well!

I called a high speed rail expert, who told me that the shinkensen has higher ridership than the acela. this means the US probably isn't ready for high speed rail KILL ME

“Once you get much beyond 400 miles (between destinations), then high speed rail begins to lose out to air because then air becomes faster (in the United States),” Thompson said. “It’s amazing how far you can go in Europe in 400 miles. Most of the major cities are within that kind of distance. That’s true in Japan as well.”

Also, when you don’t have the infrastructure built between major cities, it’s difficult to build the ridership necessary to sustain high speed rail service.

In Japan, for example, hundreds of millions of people a year ride their high-speed trains. The maximum demand predicated for California is about 30 million or 35 million, Thompson said. Amtrak’s Acela rail service between Washington and Boston carries 12 million people a year, he said.

tkl is the stronger fundraiser of the two so I think it roughly balances out. I don’t think order matters that much in this case but in general I do think it’s right to say you should rank the weaker candidate first

I’m old enough to remember the Obama “stimulus” years. My top takeaway from then and now is that agencies need to be proactively getting as many projects “shovel-ready” as possible because the federal government can actually move very, very quickly when they want to. Fortune favors the prepared!

Unfunded inclusionary zoning mandates are ineffective, part 999: Philly's mandatory overlay zones haven't produced meaningfully more affordable units than the rest of the city, while decimating what should be a development hotspot and largely directing to outer areas www.phila.gov/media/202608...

a bad scenario (for them) that this opens up the possibility of is arnold finishing ahead of zimmerman only for zimmerman’s votes to disappear because all of his voters exhausted their ballots. not likely, but it is what they’re explicitly endorsing

united for portland explicitly recommends their supporters only rank zimmerman and clark and no one else. interesting move when they have another candidate (arnold) who’s theoretically aligned with their politics
Portland City Council,
District 4
Our recommendation:
Rank Eric Zimmerman #1. Rank Olivia Clark #2.
Do not rank any other candidates.
An acceptable alternative: If you prefer, it's okay to rank Olivia #1 and Eric #2. But don't rank anyone else.
